Warhead of the Daleks XVI

56. INT. QUARANTINE CHAMBER (NIGHT)

The Dalek swivels to face the Supreme Dalek.

DALEK 1
ALL DALEK SIGNALS NO LONGER ACTIVE.

SUPREME DALEK
HAVE THEY DESTROYED EACH OTHER?

DALEK 1
FINAL REPORTS SUGGEST QX345 WAS RELEASED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE BY THE DOCTOR. THE DOCTOR AND HIS COMPANIONS ARE STILL AT LIBERTY.

SUPREME DALEK
SEND THE SURVIVING MERCENARIES AFTER THEM. THEY ARE TO BE EXECUTED!

DALEK 1
THERE ARE NO SURVIVING MERCENARIES. ORDERS WERE FOR THEM ALL TO BE EXTERMINATED.

The Supreme Dalek sounds almost annoyed.

SUPREME DALEK
THEN SEND THE ANDROIDS!

DALEK 1
THE THREE ANDROIDS HAVE BEEN DESTROYED. THE REMAINDER ARE NOT REPLYING.

SUPREME DALEK
THEN SEND THREE DALEKS TO EXTERMINATE THEM!!

DALEK 1
UNABLE TO COMPLY – OTHER CORRIDOR TERMINAL NOW TOTALLY CONTAMINATED.

The Supreme Dalek is now definitely annoyed.

SUPREME DALEK
HAS DAVROS FOUND A CURE FOR THE VIRUS?!

DALEK 1
INSUFFICIENT DATA!

Another Dalek glides forward.

SUPREME DALEK
THEN EXTERMINATE DAVROS! HE CANNOT BE TRUSTED! THIS OPERATION IS NOW CANCELLED! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!!!!!

57. INT. STYLES’ LABORATORY (NIGHT)

The room is silent, with a thin layer of mist emerging from the shattered dome. On the screen, Davros watches three Daleks glide down the corridor.

DAVROS
My forces are out of reach, the time corridor guarded, and now it seems there is only one course of action left.
Davros swivels and glides over to the hatch.

DAVROS
Extend function of chair computer. Interfacing now.

Davros flips several controls on the chair and there is a low whirring noise. He then tugs at a lever. The hatch slides back to reveal a small chamber lined with several screens and controls. Davros chuckles.

DAVROS
Destiny, Doctor. Destiny.

He glides towards the chamber and then stops. Then starts. The chair sways as if a stubborn shopping trolley, unable to be steered. Davros growls and adjusts some controls and the chair seems to start working... and then shudders.

DAVROS
What is... happening?

His voice is pained, as if speaking is an effort.

DAVROS
Malfunction... circuitry decay... exponential rate... Gahk... Analysis... virus...

Groaning with pain, Davros swings violently from side to side. Wisps of smoke begin to rise from the controls. There is a muffled explosion. Davros howls in agony.

DAVROS
No! It cannot be! No!

Davros finally slides through the doorway and clutches at his throat, gasping and choking. He can barely speak through his sobs of pain, his voice louder and grating than it has ever been before.

DAVROS
I... AM NOT... A... DALEK! I AM...

Davros gurgles loudly, head rolling back. White foam gushes from his mouth, and then the hatch slides down, cutting off our view.

58. INT. SELF-DESTRUCT CHAMBER (NIGHT)

Styles activates the final switch and hauls back the lever. The controls glow red.

STYLES
Done it.

MERCER
No way we can set up a remote?

STYLES
No chance.

MERCER
Pity. Still, I never really expected to get off the station alive.

The door slides open to reveal three Daleks in a row. Styles folds her arms and laughs.

STYLES
Sorry, this is a private party. Invite only.

The lead Dalek glances at the others as if confused.

STYLES
One inch closer and we detonate.

MERCER
So, do you want survive or kill us all?

A long pause.

DALEK
EXTERMINATE!!!

MERCER
Thought so!

Mercer lunges for the main lever, slamming it down. Without speaking, the Daleks open fire. Styles is flung across the room and Mercer slides to the floor. There is a rising, building roar, getting louder and louder.

59. INT. QUARANTINE CHAMBER (NIGHT)

The Dalek approaches the Supreme Dalek.

DALEK 1
SENSORS INDICATE AN ESCAPE POD IS BEING EJECTED FROM THE STATION.

SUPREME DALEK
PREPARE TO OPEN FIRE!

DALEK 2
ALERT! ALERT! STATION REACTOR OVERLOADING!

SUPREME DALEK
DISENGAGE FROM STATION AND WITHDRAW! DISENGAGE! DIS--

There is a shockingly loud roar. The Daleks swing their eyestalks to face it.

60. MODEL SHOT

The station explodes outwards in a massive fireball. The noise is only slightly softer than the secondary explosion when the damaged cruiser explodes as well. For a long time the explosion rolls out in all directions, a few debris spinning through the flames. Then something hurtles straight at us, over us and beyond. We turn and follow a burning object as it shoots off into space.

61. EXT. DOCKLANDS

The TARDIS materializes where it was on the docklands.

62. INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (NIGHT)

The scanner opens to reveal the view outside. The Doctor is checking the controls intensely.

DOCTOR
Well, that’s interesting. The time corridor is imploding. In a few minutes it will be clear enough for the TARDIS to travel normally again.

TEGAN
Why? What’s happened?

The Doctor checks the monitor.

DOCTOR
The vortex maintenance systems must have been destroyed – presumably along with the Dalek ship containing the other terminal.

KAMELION
Could it be Davros?

DOCTOR
No. It would take an enormous explosion. Like the...

The Doctor trails off.

DOCTOR
The self-destruct device on the space station. Mercer and Styles must have carried out their duties after all. As for the time corridor, it’s losing integrity, but there seems to be some energy heading down it, residual from the explosion, I suppose.

TURLOUGH
Is it dangerous?

DOCTOR
Not to us. It’ll just be a few sparks in the warehouse in the next few hours.

KAMELION
Which is filled with combustible materials smothered in QX345.

TURLOUGH
It’ll be quite a bang.

DOCTOR
Oh, I doubt it. Besides, that forest of brickwork was being torn down anyway. At least this way it gets a warrior’s burial... and those who earned it.

Tegan looks at him in disgust. The Doctor doesn’t notice, setting coordinates.

TURLOUGH
What about the Daleks?

KAMELION
There is only one remaining faction at Azorius Minor. They will not dare leave quarantine for any reason – unless a cure for the Movellan virus is found.

DOCTOR
Which it won’t be now Davros is gone.

TEGAN
So, that’s the end of the Daleks?

Silence.

TEGAN
Doctor?

DOCTOR
Right. Just a few minutes more and the time lines will be clear enough for us to leave.

Suddenly, Kamelion shimmers and returns to his real android shape.

KAMELION
I shall remain in my quarters.

TURLOUGH
Will you?

KAMELION
Until I can be sure I am not a threat to my fellow travelers.

TEGAN
I always said you couldn’t trust him.

DOCTOR
That’s enough, Tegan.

KAMELION
Miss Jovanka is correct, Doctor. I cannot be trusted. Both the Master and the Daleks were able to totally control me.

DOCTOR
That’s life, Kamelion.

KAMELION
No, Doctor.

He sparkles and transforms into a copy of the Doctor.

KAMELION-DOCTOR
If I cannot be sure of my loyalty, I can at least guarantee your safety.

Kamelion/Doctor turns and walks off, hands in his pockets. The others watch him go.

DOCTOR
Very disconcerting.

TURLOUGH
Good riddance.

TEGAN
What now?

The Doctor turns back to the console.

DOCTOR
Well, I don’t know about you but I rather think I would feel safer by giving the TARDIS systems a complete check over. After the damage from those tumbles in the time corridor, and I still haven’t had the chance to make sure that the spatial distribution caused by the Gravis and his drones hasn’t left any anomolies, and it’s about time I had another go at fixing the chameleon circuit...

TURLOUGH
And are you going to do that in flight or do you have a destination?

DOCTOR
We never did finish that trip to the Eye of Orion, did we?

Tegan sighs. She speaks very quietly.

TEGAN
I’m not coming with you.

The Doctor whirls around, startled. Turlough, who didn’t hear, is surprised.

DOCTOR
I beg your pardon?!

Tegan looks at him wearily.

TEGAN
I’m tired.

The Doctor steps forward, speaking gently.

DOCTOR
What’s the matter?

TEGAN
Do you know how many people died today, Doctor? A lot. Lots of good people and they’re all dead.

DOCTOR
You think I wanted it this way?

TEGAN
Not everything is about you! I can’t take this any more! I can’t... DO this any more!

DOCTOR
What do you mean?

TEGAN
You went out today to kill someone, to murder someone in cold blood! I thought there was supposed to another way?

DOCTOR
So did I. Maybe we were wrong.

TEGAN
So is this all there is? Just more killing and death? I’ve seen more today than most people could cope with in a life time. I’m sick of it!

DOCTOR
So am I Tegan! I’m sick of letting them die, of counting the corpses! If this way works, then I’ll take it!

TEGAN
You what? ... There are monsters out there, and sometimes they win. And they won today, didn’t they? Even though they lost. They changed you. Just like they changed Kamelion. They won. And if they have, then what’s the point?

Turlough shifts awkwardly.

TURLOUGH
We could... stay on Earth for a bit. If you want.

Tegan shakes her head, speaking in a firmer voice.

TEGAN
My Aunt Vanessa said when I became an air stewardess, ‘if you stop enjoying it, then just give it up and don’t look back’.

The Doctor swallows, not knowing what to say.

DOCTOR
Tegan, I...

TEGAN
It’s stopped being fun, Doctor.

DOCTOR
You don’t have to go, Tegan...

TEGAN
Goodbye, Doctor.

She holds out her hand to Turlough.

TEGAN
Goodbye.

Taken aback, Turlough shakes her hand, at a loss for words.

TURLOUGH
Er... goodbye.

She pulls the lever and the doors open.

TEGAN
I’ll miss you both. Say goodbye to Kamelion for me.

She turns away and hurries towards the doors. The Doctor, watching her in stunned silence, suddenly comes to life.

DOCTOR
NO!!! Tegan!!

The Doctor runs after her. Turlough follows.

63. EXT. DOCKLANDS (DAY)

The doors to the TARDIS rattle open and Tegan runs out, takes a second to reorient herself and then finds herself looking at the shore. The corpse of the OLD MAN lying sprawled on the wreckage. Tegan looks sick. The Doctor steps from the ship.

DOCTOR
Tegan!

Silence.

DOCTOR
Tegan, don’t leave... Not like this.

Tears trickle down Tegan’s cheeks. Her voice cracks with emotion.

TEGAN
I must... I’m sorry! Goodbye!

She turns and sprints off into the gloom. The Doctor watches her, breathing hard. Turlough emerges from the TARDIS and watches on, expression dark.

DOCTOR
Tegan! Don’t be stupid! You don’t know anyone in London, you don’t even have your passport! Where are you going to go? What are you going to do?

No reply, as she runs off.

DOCTOR
TEGAN!

She disappears into the gloom. The Doctor starts to follow.

DOCTOR
Come on, Turlough, we can...

Turlough reaches out and grabs the Doctor, holding him back.

TURLOUGH
Let her go, Doctor!

The Doctor tears himself free but Turlough grabs him again.

TURLOUGH
Doctor! She’s made her choice. Please. Dragging her back will only make it worse.

The Doctor looks in the direction Tegan took. He looks pained.

DOCTOR
So many goodbyes. Never gets any easier.

TURLOUGH
Come on, let’s just go. I’ve had enough of this place.

Turlough releases the Doctor and heads for the TARDIS. The Doctor stays where he is, looking for Tegan. Turlough stands in the doorway.

TURLOUGH
Doctor?

DOCTOR
What if she comes back? We can’t just leave her...

TURLOUGH
She won’t change her mind. You know that.

DOCTOR
It’s... ah... strange. I left Gallifrey for similar reasons. I’d grown tired of their lifestyle... thought they’d betrayed their ideals.

The Doctor shakes his head and follows Turlough into the TARDIS. He pauses on the threshold and looks back. No sign of Tegan.

DOCTOR
It seems I must mend my ways.

He re-enters the police box and closes the doors. For a long moment, there is only the sound of the breeze before the TARDIS dematerializes, fading away. The silence returns. We pan up to the now clear sky to see the stars.

64. INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (NIGHT)

The Doctor leans against the console, staring into the time rotor. Turlough is staring at the scanner as it shows Earth retreating into the depths of space. He pulls off his tie and rubs his neck.

TURLOUGH
I’ll check the stabilizers.

He checks the monitor on the console. The Doctor doesn’t notice.

TURLOUGH
Doctor?

DOCTOR
Hmm?

TURLOUGH
What are we going to do about Kamelion? What have you got planned?

DOCTOR
Nothing. I’ve got nothing planned.

TURLOUGH
Doctor, we can’t trust him! He nearly got us all killed – that nice little android routine is only genuine when he’s stuck inside here, with you! First it was the Master, then it was the Daleks... Next time we might not be so lucky.

DOCTOR
What do you want me to do? We can’t abandon him somewhere – if that technology falls into anyone’s hands...
He bangs the console angrily.

DOCTOR
And it’s not Kamelion’s fault, Turlough! It wasn’t his choice to be created like that! Just more problems created by the Daleks! I sometimes think those mutated misfits will terrorize the universe for the rest of time...
Turlough sighs and speaks gently.

TURLOUGH
Doctor. You’re becoming obsessed.

DOCTOR
Exactly... obsessed and depressed.

TURLOUGH
You’re missing Tegan?

The Doctor sighs.

DOCTOR
Well, we were together a long time. It’s not the same without her.

TURLOUGH
Quieter.

DOCTOR
Yes, no more of you two bickering.

TURLOUGH
We were friends at the end. Well, I hope we were. Still, it hardly matters now. What we both need is a holiday.

The Doctor gives Turlough a ‘give me strength’ look.

TURLOUGH
Oh, it could be fun!

DOCTOR
Fun?! There was precious little “fun” when I went on holiday to Brighton. Unutterable chaos ensued...

TURLOUGH
I didn’t have Brighton in mind. It’s probably just like Weston Super Mare. I want somewhere nice and warm, a paradise island. On Earth, you’ll like that. It’ll do you the world of good. There must be somewhere like that in the databanks...

The Doctor crosses the room and rather rudely shoves Turlough aside.

DOCTOR
All right, Turlough – I’ll show you what holidays are like – only don’t say I didn’t warn you!

The Doctor begins to set controls with a defiant glare. Suddenly there is a tortured scream from beyond the console room.

DOCTOR
Kamelion!

The Doctor and Turlough run out of the room.

65. EXT. TOWER BRIDGE WALKWAY (NIGHT)

We see the empty wharf where the TARDIS once stood, and pull back over the waters of the Thames to see Tegan standing alone, looking sadly down at the waters. She sniffs away a tear, rubbing her eyes, swallows.
TEGAN
Brave heart, Tegan. Oh, Doctor... I will miss you.

She takes a deep breath, straightens her shoulders and turns away. She walks down the bridge, soon vanishing into the gloom. We pan upwards through the dark sky to see dawn is finally breaking.
