Warhead of the Daleks cover

WARHEAD OF THE DALEKS

by Ewen Campion-Clarke

based on the scripts by Eric Saward

Captured in a Time Corridor, the Doctor and his companions are forced to land on 20th Century Earth, diverted by the Doctor's oldest enemy - the Daleks.

It is here that the true purpose of the Time Corridor becomes apparent: after 90 years of imprisonment, Davros, the ruthless creator of the Daleks, is to be liberated to assist in the resurrection of his army. But not even the Daleks foresee the poisonous threat presented by their creator. Indeed, who would suspect Davros of wanting to destroy his own Daleks - and why?

Only the Doctor knows the truth. But will he be capable of descending to Davros' level of evil in order to stop him?

Warhead reviews

"Very nice! I especially like the way it has the traditional "Oh, no, Dalek!" cliffhanger. Seriously, with Dalek stories you knew what the cliffhanger would be as soon as you saw the title. Dramatically it doesn't really make sense but as a fanboy I just love it. Of course, I still haven't actually seen the original, but once I do I'm sure I'll appreciate the difference. I can imagine the spacestation crew aren't nearly as much fun, for one thing. Words fail in describing my thoughts on the Doctor's dream montage. Watching it on TV... what springs to mind is a bizarre cocktail of so-camp-you-get-slightly-embarassed-watching-it, unbearably funny, just plain weird, and heart-warming. So, in short, I think it's perfect!"
- Jared Hansen

"Interesting. Good. Very good, in fact. Looks fine to me. Neat. WOW! Brilliant! Lytton's nasty. WHY DIDN'T WE GET THAT ON SCREEN????????????? Oooooooooh... Interesting character development and set up there. Chilling. Reads well. Much better than Eric's. WOW!!!!! THE DOCTOR IS CENTRE OF THE PLOT AND GETS TO INTERACT WITH MORE OF THE GUEST CAST!!!!!!!!!! SEE ERIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is fun! That bit sounds very foreboding. Now THAT makes Davros' escape much, much clearer. Aww, poor Tegan.... Very downbeat. Very enjoyable work. Excellent! At last!"
- Cameron J Mason

"Dear oh dear. A character called Tarrant. How Nation of you Ewen. :) I like it. Even the use of Kamelion. A nice way to intgrate him into the story that WAS used in his final story (get an actor to play the role)."
- Daniel W

"Not exactly different from the original in many ways and the dialogue suffers from colloquialisms. It is innappropriate for an early 80s 5th Doctor story - more suited tothe new series. As far as Resurrection is concerned the only minor flaws I remember is thetitle which gives away that the Daleks are in it and the fact that Davros isn't sinister enough. Explaining minor points like those detracts from the main story. Foreshadowing spoils the surprise at the end. Minor characters don't need dialogue, names or personality. The lack of smoking is political correctness. Admittedly the Daleks being kept in the shadows until the cliffhanger an improvement - I'll give you this, and the army in the warehouse too. Much better."
- Sparacus

"Lmao over the outtake! Nerdy references are great, though, aren't they? But that would have been fan-flippin-tastic, Mel Smith and Davison as companion-and-Doctor combo! Once again I'm yearning for the parallel universe where all these crazy scripts we wrote actually got made into celluloid..."
- Jared Hansen again

DWM Review: Warhead of the Daleks!

Caught in a time corridor, the TARDIS is drawn to an abandoned warehouse in London 1984 where the Doctor, Tegan, Turlough and Kamelion encounter a UNIT investigation team. In 4593, the Daleks send the Charnel House Warriors to attack Cassius Four, a space station prison where Davros has been frozen for ninety years. Having lost their war with the Movellans, a virus has left the Daleks on the verge of extinction. They need Davros to provide a cure, but Davros has his own plans for his creations. As the Doctor fights to stop the Daleks from rebuilding their empire, not even the TARDIS crew can escape untouched by the tragic events unfolding around them...

The fourteenth Dalek story in twenty-one years was as near perfection as it is possible to get. Rula Lenska's Styles steals the show, despite stiff competition from three dimensional characters whose deaths are genuinely upsetting. Even Phin and Mellor, who barely get any dialogue, are mourned and their deaths treated as horrifying acts rather than simple "bang bang you are dead fifty bullets in your head".

If one had to fault on anything, it would have to be that it was too short - another tweny-five minutes might have helped, if only to find out what happened to Tegan and Lytton. The idea of them meeting each other and teaming up to survive 1980s Britain is almost too interesting to ignore. Might this be a spin-off?

Matthew Robinson's Doctor Who debut was stunning. He took full opportunity with his location work - the opening shots of the builders being mown down by Lytton's policemen was great, a marvellous opener. When first the Doctor, then Tegan and Kamelion, arrive and UNIT already investigating the mysterious communications blindspot, we entered into a terrible world of intrigue where everyone either was (or might end up being) a traitor: Daleks, humans, Kamelion androids, Davros' zombies and even companions turning against the Doctor. All these elements combined together to make four episodes of sheer drama, with degrees of excitement and tension not seen in the programme in a long time.

From the Dalek guard released into the warehouse to Mercer watching his men and women being blasted down in cold blood left, right and centre, right through to the last moments when Davros succumbs to the Movellan virus, Warhead of the Daleks glowed with style and class. Although the script showed the Daleks as weak-willed, paranoid and defeated creatures, they still came across as horribly dangerous and itching to join in with the mayhem being caused at their command. Any status lost with their last appearance is back in avengence, and the story cleverly leaves a final Dalek outpost intact for the new Doctor to hunt down next year - another thing to look forward to in 1985!

The return of Davros (looking like he really was ninety years older) was far more effective than the ranting looney of Destiny of the Daleks. This Davros was a lot older, a lot wiser and, above all, a lot more bitter - determined to unleash his pent up anger at enforced impotent-but-aware immobility on anyone that got in the way. Yet his cast iron control of his emotions made him more dangerous; ironically the scene where he has his Daleks torture the Doctor was more comfortable than his icy politeness to his "rescuers", the Dalek Task Force, most of whom would soon become his slaves. The first, Kiston, had very little to do though was clearly portrayed as an intimidating figure even among his own men. In the hands of an actor less powerful than Les Grantham, this could have been a disaster, and when Davros converts him to his side, it is hard not to worry about the good guys' chances of survival. It was sad that he was unceremoniously zapped at the end, but considering the ignoble end of the other main characters, perhaps it is a mercy?

Davros dominated the show from the moment he was thawed - treated as the real danger by the Doctor, Lytton and the Daleks. Although his handy brainwashing gun was contrived, the explanation for it was well thought out and the fact it didn't work on the Doctor, but instead allowed the plot to go in a very different direction, made up for it. Davros aims were simple: to make the Daleks the threat they should be, either by breeding a new species or changing history back to the massive empire we saw in the 1960s stories. But the idea of a new, disease-immune Daleks could only lead to civil war with the already endangered ones.

Although it only consists of the last twelve minutes of the story, the civil war is arguably the most memorable thing in the story as the fate of the universe is decided in an abandoned Wapping werehouse as two factions of Daleks created a crossfire that slaughtered almost every speaking part, good or bad, before the Movellan virus claimed what was left. The sight of the Daleks going mad and slumping dead was not quite as disturbing as when Davros himself was infected... but was he killed by it? The escape capsule Styles was so fixated on clearly escaped the conflaguration with Davros aboard, but was he a passenger or a corpse? I think it would be a shame if he did survive. Three stories are enough, we have seen all of Davros that can be seen, and his overwhelming presence is clearly to the detriment of his creations. Hopefully the next Dalek story will shown them a force to be reckoned with, without their scene-stealing creator.

And what of the Doctor? Davros told him exactly what he thought of him and the Doctor paid him back, losing his cool in a way Tom Baker's Doctor refused to, but this made the scenes all the more chilling when it appeared the Doctor was about to blow the mutant's head off. The Doctor's refusal to give into mindless violence is to be applauded, though it's hard to argue with his later volte-face. If cold blooded murder could have stopped the massacre in the final episode, would that have justified it?

With the intense amount of guest cast, the regulars suffered - Tegan and Turlough spent most of the story running around a warehouse or a space station dodging bullets. However, their brief heart to hearts showing that they have both grown tired of TARDIS travel made up for it. This, and Kamelion's ominous prediction that their destiny was about to curve unexpectedly, prove the next three adventures won't let up the pace. Kamelion's revelation of origins fitted well into the story, as did his struggle to regain free will echoed those of both Lytton and Kiston, and when he apparently betrayed the Doctor, Mel Smith gave the android a smugness that made it all the more convincing.

Tegan's departure has to go down as one of the most traumatic there is, especially her decision to leave after the chaos has ended and she is safe and sound in the TARDIS. The sight of the carnage pushed her to the brink, but her tragically misplaced belief in the Doctor being killer caused her to finally flip - and who could blame her? The Doctor's willingness to chase through London and bodily drag her back shows how much both he and us will miss Tegan. She'll be irreplaceable and hopefully that will be proved wrong when her replacement arrives...

Director Matthew Robinson deserves a medal (and perhaps counselling) for Warhead of the Daleks, all his fine work with the camera, the marvellous battle scenes, his building up of suspense: notable with the disappearing policemen and even the dream sequence (I was expecting a flashback in a Dalek story, and its ridiculous collage of images is something likely to be derided by just about anyone with taste), were all handled with consumate skill, and, it seemed, genuine enjoyment.

Whilst Warhead of the Daleks borrowed extensively from previous Dalek stories (Evil and Day being the most obvious), it never sank to sensationalism of Warriors of the Deep. Warhead of the Daleks ended like Frontios, dovetailing into the next story as the TARDIS heads for a holiday destination that gives Kamelion the heeby-geebies. But Lytton is still loose in London with his lethal android policement, the warehouse has exploded taking a UNIT team with it, and in the far future there is a chance that the last of the Daleks might find their own cure. It's an open ending which will no doubt be built on next year once the reformatting of the show - "the curve in destiny" - is complete.

Warhead of the Daleks XVI

56. INT. QUARANTINE CHAMBER (NIGHT)

The Dalek swivels to face the Supreme Dalek.

DALEK 1
ALL DALEK SIGNALS NO LONGER ACTIVE.

SUPREME DALEK
HAVE THEY DESTROYED EACH OTHER?

DALEK 1
FINAL REPORTS SUGGEST QX345 WAS RELEASED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE BY THE DOCTOR. THE DOCTOR AND HIS COMPANIONS ARE STILL AT LIBERTY.

SUPREME DALEK
SEND THE SURVIVING MERCENARIES AFTER THEM. THEY ARE TO BE EXECUTED!

DALEK 1
THERE ARE NO SURVIVING MERCENARIES. ORDERS WERE FOR THEM ALL TO BE EXTERMINATED.

The Supreme Dalek sounds almost annoyed.

SUPREME DALEK
THEN SEND THE ANDROIDS!

DALEK 1
THE THREE ANDROIDS HAVE BEEN DESTROYED. THE REMAINDER ARE NOT REPLYING.

SUPREME DALEK
THEN SEND THREE DALEKS TO EXTERMINATE THEM!!

DALEK 1
UNABLE TO COMPLY – OTHER CORRIDOR TERMINAL NOW TOTALLY CONTAMINATED.

The Supreme Dalek is now definitely annoyed.

SUPREME DALEK
HAS DAVROS FOUND A CURE FOR THE VIRUS?!

DALEK 1
INSUFFICIENT DATA!

Another Dalek glides forward.

SUPREME DALEK
THEN EXTERMINATE DAVROS! HE CANNOT BE TRUSTED! THIS OPERATION IS NOW CANCELLED! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!!!!!

57. INT. STYLES’ LABORATORY (NIGHT)

The room is silent, with a thin layer of mist emerging from the shattered dome. On the screen, Davros watches three Daleks glide down the corridor.

DAVROS
My forces are out of reach, the time corridor guarded, and now it seems there is only one course of action left.
Davros swivels and glides over to the hatch.

DAVROS
Extend function of chair computer. Interfacing now.

Davros flips several controls on the chair and there is a low whirring noise. He then tugs at a lever. The hatch slides back to reveal a small chamber lined with several screens and controls. Davros chuckles.

DAVROS
Destiny, Doctor. Destiny.

He glides towards the chamber and then stops. Then starts. The chair sways as if a stubborn shopping trolley, unable to be steered. Davros growls and adjusts some controls and the chair seems to start working... and then shudders.

DAVROS
What is... happening?

His voice is pained, as if speaking is an effort.

DAVROS
Malfunction... circuitry decay... exponential rate... Gahk... Analysis... virus...

Groaning with pain, Davros swings violently from side to side. Wisps of smoke begin to rise from the controls. There is a muffled explosion. Davros howls in agony.

DAVROS
No! It cannot be! No!

Davros finally slides through the doorway and clutches at his throat, gasping and choking. He can barely speak through his sobs of pain, his voice louder and grating than it has ever been before.

DAVROS
I... AM NOT... A... DALEK! I AM...

Davros gurgles loudly, head rolling back. White foam gushes from his mouth, and then the hatch slides down, cutting off our view.

58. INT. SELF-DESTRUCT CHAMBER (NIGHT)

Styles activates the final switch and hauls back the lever. The controls glow red.

STYLES
Done it.

MERCER
No way we can set up a remote?

STYLES
No chance.

MERCER
Pity. Still, I never really expected to get off the station alive.

The door slides open to reveal three Daleks in a row. Styles folds her arms and laughs.

STYLES
Sorry, this is a private party. Invite only.

The lead Dalek glances at the others as if confused.

STYLES
One inch closer and we detonate.

MERCER
So, do you want survive or kill us all?

A long pause.

DALEK
EXTERMINATE!!!

MERCER
Thought so!

Mercer lunges for the main lever, slamming it down. Without speaking, the Daleks open fire. Styles is flung across the room and Mercer slides to the floor. There is a rising, building roar, getting louder and louder.

59. INT. QUARANTINE CHAMBER (NIGHT)

The Dalek approaches the Supreme Dalek.

DALEK 1
SENSORS INDICATE AN ESCAPE POD IS BEING EJECTED FROM THE STATION.

SUPREME DALEK
PREPARE TO OPEN FIRE!

DALEK 2
ALERT! ALERT! STATION REACTOR OVERLOADING!

SUPREME DALEK
DISENGAGE FROM STATION AND WITHDRAW! DISENGAGE! DIS--

There is a shockingly loud roar. The Daleks swing their eyestalks to face it.

60. MODEL SHOT

The station explodes outwards in a massive fireball. The noise is only slightly softer than the secondary explosion when the damaged cruiser explodes as well. For a long time the explosion rolls out in all directions, a few debris spinning through the flames. Then something hurtles straight at us, over us and beyond. We turn and follow a burning object as it shoots off into space.

61. EXT. DOCKLANDS

The TARDIS materializes where it was on the docklands.

62. INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (NIGHT)

The scanner opens to reveal the view outside. The Doctor is checking the controls intensely.

DOCTOR
Well, that’s interesting. The time corridor is imploding. In a few minutes it will be clear enough for the TARDIS to travel normally again.

TEGAN
Why? What’s happened?

The Doctor checks the monitor.

DOCTOR
The vortex maintenance systems must have been destroyed – presumably along with the Dalek ship containing the other terminal.

KAMELION
Could it be Davros?

DOCTOR
No. It would take an enormous explosion. Like the...

The Doctor trails off.

DOCTOR
The self-destruct device on the space station. Mercer and Styles must have carried out their duties after all. As for the time corridor, it’s losing integrity, but there seems to be some energy heading down it, residual from the explosion, I suppose.

TURLOUGH
Is it dangerous?

DOCTOR
Not to us. It’ll just be a few sparks in the warehouse in the next few hours.

KAMELION
Which is filled with combustible materials smothered in QX345.

TURLOUGH
It’ll be quite a bang.

DOCTOR
Oh, I doubt it. Besides, that forest of brickwork was being torn down anyway. At least this way it gets a warrior’s burial... and those who earned it.

Tegan looks at him in disgust. The Doctor doesn’t notice, setting coordinates.

TURLOUGH
What about the Daleks?

KAMELION
There is only one remaining faction at Azorius Minor. They will not dare leave quarantine for any reason – unless a cure for the Movellan virus is found.

DOCTOR
Which it won’t be now Davros is gone.

TEGAN
So, that’s the end of the Daleks?

Silence.

TEGAN
Doctor?

DOCTOR
Right. Just a few minutes more and the time lines will be clear enough for us to leave.

Suddenly, Kamelion shimmers and returns to his real android shape.

KAMELION
I shall remain in my quarters.

TURLOUGH
Will you?

KAMELION
Until I can be sure I am not a threat to my fellow travelers.

TEGAN
I always said you couldn’t trust him.

DOCTOR
That’s enough, Tegan.

KAMELION
Miss Jovanka is correct, Doctor. I cannot be trusted. Both the Master and the Daleks were able to totally control me.

DOCTOR
That’s life, Kamelion.

KAMELION
No, Doctor.

He sparkles and transforms into a copy of the Doctor.

KAMELION-DOCTOR
If I cannot be sure of my loyalty, I can at least guarantee your safety.

Kamelion/Doctor turns and walks off, hands in his pockets. The others watch him go.

DOCTOR
Very disconcerting.

TURLOUGH
Good riddance.

TEGAN
What now?

The Doctor turns back to the console.

DOCTOR
Well, I don’t know about you but I rather think I would feel safer by giving the TARDIS systems a complete check over. After the damage from those tumbles in the time corridor, and I still haven’t had the chance to make sure that the spatial distribution caused by the Gravis and his drones hasn’t left any anomolies, and it’s about time I had another go at fixing the chameleon circuit...

TURLOUGH
And are you going to do that in flight or do you have a destination?

DOCTOR
We never did finish that trip to the Eye of Orion, did we?

Tegan sighs. She speaks very quietly.

TEGAN
I’m not coming with you.

The Doctor whirls around, startled. Turlough, who didn’t hear, is surprised.

DOCTOR
I beg your pardon?!

Tegan looks at him wearily.

TEGAN
I’m tired.

The Doctor steps forward, speaking gently.

DOCTOR
What’s the matter?

TEGAN
Do you know how many people died today, Doctor? A lot. Lots of good people and they’re all dead.

DOCTOR
You think I wanted it this way?

TEGAN
Not everything is about you! I can’t take this any more! I can’t... DO this any more!

DOCTOR
What do you mean?

TEGAN
You went out today to kill someone, to murder someone in cold blood! I thought there was supposed to another way?

DOCTOR
So did I. Maybe we were wrong.

TEGAN
So is this all there is? Just more killing and death? I’ve seen more today than most people could cope with in a life time. I’m sick of it!

DOCTOR
So am I Tegan! I’m sick of letting them die, of counting the corpses! If this way works, then I’ll take it!

TEGAN
You what? ... There are monsters out there, and sometimes they win. And they won today, didn’t they? Even though they lost. They changed you. Just like they changed Kamelion. They won. And if they have, then what’s the point?

Turlough shifts awkwardly.

TURLOUGH
We could... stay on Earth for a bit. If you want.

Tegan shakes her head, speaking in a firmer voice.

TEGAN
My Aunt Vanessa said when I became an air stewardess, ‘if you stop enjoying it, then just give it up and don’t look back’.

The Doctor swallows, not knowing what to say.

DOCTOR
Tegan, I...

TEGAN
It’s stopped being fun, Doctor.

DOCTOR
You don’t have to go, Tegan...

TEGAN
Goodbye, Doctor.

She holds out her hand to Turlough.

TEGAN
Goodbye.

Taken aback, Turlough shakes her hand, at a loss for words.

TURLOUGH
Er... goodbye.

She pulls the lever and the doors open.

TEGAN
I’ll miss you both. Say goodbye to Kamelion for me.

She turns away and hurries towards the doors. The Doctor, watching her in stunned silence, suddenly comes to life.

DOCTOR
NO!!! Tegan!!

The Doctor runs after her. Turlough follows.

63. EXT. DOCKLANDS (DAY)

The doors to the TARDIS rattle open and Tegan runs out, takes a second to reorient herself and then finds herself looking at the shore. The corpse of the OLD MAN lying sprawled on the wreckage. Tegan looks sick. The Doctor steps from the ship.

DOCTOR
Tegan!

Silence.

DOCTOR
Tegan, don’t leave... Not like this.

Tears trickle down Tegan’s cheeks. Her voice cracks with emotion.

TEGAN
I must... I’m sorry! Goodbye!

She turns and sprints off into the gloom. The Doctor watches her, breathing hard. Turlough emerges from the TARDIS and watches on, expression dark.

DOCTOR
Tegan! Don’t be stupid! You don’t know anyone in London, you don’t even have your passport! Where are you going to go? What are you going to do?

No reply, as she runs off.

DOCTOR
TEGAN!

She disappears into the gloom. The Doctor starts to follow.

DOCTOR
Come on, Turlough, we can...

Turlough reaches out and grabs the Doctor, holding him back.

TURLOUGH
Let her go, Doctor!

The Doctor tears himself free but Turlough grabs him again.

TURLOUGH
Doctor! She’s made her choice. Please. Dragging her back will only make it worse.

The Doctor looks in the direction Tegan took. He looks pained.

DOCTOR
So many goodbyes. Never gets any easier.

TURLOUGH
Come on, let’s just go. I’ve had enough of this place.

Turlough releases the Doctor and heads for the TARDIS. The Doctor stays where he is, looking for Tegan. Turlough stands in the doorway.

TURLOUGH
Doctor?

DOCTOR
What if she comes back? We can’t just leave her...

TURLOUGH
She won’t change her mind. You know that.

DOCTOR
It’s... ah... strange. I left Gallifrey for similar reasons. I’d grown tired of their lifestyle... thought they’d betrayed their ideals.

The Doctor shakes his head and follows Turlough into the TARDIS. He pauses on the threshold and looks back. No sign of Tegan.

DOCTOR
It seems I must mend my ways.

He re-enters the police box and closes the doors. For a long moment, there is only the sound of the breeze before the TARDIS dematerializes, fading away. The silence returns. We pan up to the now clear sky to see the stars.

64. INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (NIGHT)

The Doctor leans against the console, staring into the time rotor. Turlough is staring at the scanner as it shows Earth retreating into the depths of space. He pulls off his tie and rubs his neck.

TURLOUGH
I’ll check the stabilizers.

He checks the monitor on the console. The Doctor doesn’t notice.

TURLOUGH
Doctor?

DOCTOR
Hmm?

TURLOUGH
What are we going to do about Kamelion? What have you got planned?

DOCTOR
Nothing. I’ve got nothing planned.

TURLOUGH
Doctor, we can’t trust him! He nearly got us all killed – that nice little android routine is only genuine when he’s stuck inside here, with you! First it was the Master, then it was the Daleks... Next time we might not be so lucky.

DOCTOR
What do you want me to do? We can’t abandon him somewhere – if that technology falls into anyone’s hands...
He bangs the console angrily.

DOCTOR
And it’s not Kamelion’s fault, Turlough! It wasn’t his choice to be created like that! Just more problems created by the Daleks! I sometimes think those mutated misfits will terrorize the universe for the rest of time...
Turlough sighs and speaks gently.

TURLOUGH
Doctor. You’re becoming obsessed.

DOCTOR
Exactly... obsessed and depressed.

TURLOUGH
You’re missing Tegan?

The Doctor sighs.

DOCTOR
Well, we were together a long time. It’s not the same without her.

TURLOUGH
Quieter.

DOCTOR
Yes, no more of you two bickering.

TURLOUGH
We were friends at the end. Well, I hope we were. Still, it hardly matters now. What we both need is a holiday.

The Doctor gives Turlough a ‘give me strength’ look.

TURLOUGH
Oh, it could be fun!

DOCTOR
Fun?! There was precious little “fun” when I went on holiday to Brighton. Unutterable chaos ensued...

TURLOUGH
I didn’t have Brighton in mind. It’s probably just like Weston Super Mare. I want somewhere nice and warm, a paradise island. On Earth, you’ll like that. It’ll do you the world of good. There must be somewhere like that in the databanks...

The Doctor crosses the room and rather rudely shoves Turlough aside.

DOCTOR
All right, Turlough – I’ll show you what holidays are like – only don’t say I didn’t warn you!

The Doctor begins to set controls with a defiant glare. Suddenly there is a tortured scream from beyond the console room.

DOCTOR
Kamelion!

The Doctor and Turlough run out of the room.

65. EXT. TOWER BRIDGE WALKWAY (NIGHT)

We see the empty wharf where the TARDIS once stood, and pull back over the waters of the Thames to see Tegan standing alone, looking sadly down at the waters. She sniffs away a tear, rubbing her eyes, swallows.
TEGAN
Brave heart, Tegan. Oh, Doctor... I will miss you.

She takes a deep breath, straightens her shoulders and turns away. She walks down the bridge, soon vanishing into the gloom. We pan upwards through the dark sky to see dawn is finally breaking.

35. INT. SELF-DESTRUCT CHAMBER (NIGHT)

Styles and Mercer enter. Mercer guards the door as Styles flips some switches. After a moment the transparent dome retracts.

STYLES
So far so good.

MERCER
Any sign of a timer?

STYLES
No.

MERCER
So we couldn’t use that escape pod of yours?

STYLES
We’d have to get past the Prisoner first and he’s not going to let us in, is he?

Styles starts adjusting more controls.

MERCER
We’re not going to get out of this, are we?

STYLES
Don’t come apart now, Mercer. You want to die a hero.

MERCER
Roylan. My name’s Roylan.

Styles looks up at him and smiles.

STYLES
Korin.

Mercer smiles.

MERCER
I just wish we’d met somewhere else.

Styles places her hand over his.

STYLES
Regret’s part of being alive. We’re not going to have to worry about it for much longer.

She goes back to the controls.

36. INT. QUARANTINE CHAMBER (NIGHT)

As before.

SUPREME DALEK
WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE DALEK SENT TO RESCUE DAVROS?

DALEK 1
ITS TRANSPONDER HAS CEASED TRANSMITTING. IT HAS BEEN DESTROYED.

DALEK 2
ALERT! POWER FLUCTUATIONS ABOARD CASSIUS FOUR! THE SELF-DESTRUCT SYSTEMS ARE BEING BROUGHT ON LINE BY MANUAL CONTROL! HOSTILES HAVE BROKEN INTO THE SELF-DESTRUCT CHAMBER! EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY!

SUPREME DALEK
SEND THREE DALEKS THERE AT ONCE! THEY MUST BE STOPPED! EXTERMINATE THEM!

37. INT. RECEPTION AREA (NIGHT)

The Doctor and Kamelion run down a corridor into the chamber. The Doctor fiddles with a button on the door and the shutter slides up. The Doctor ducks into an alcove.

KAMELION
Daleks are approaching!

DOCTOR
I just need a few more seconds. Go through!

KAMELION
I should stay with you, Doctor.

The Doctor hurries back with a cylinder.

DOCTOR
Just the thing.

We see the shadows of an approaching Dalek squad. The Doctor hands Kamelion the cylinder and bundles him inside, then uses the rifle to shoot out the control. The Daleks turn the corner and spot him as he ducks inside.

DALEK 1
IT IS THE DOCTOR! EXTERMINATE!

DALEKS 2 & 3
EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!

The shutter closes as they fire. The beam explodes against the shutter.

DALEK 1
HAVE THE TIME CORRIDOR SEALED OFF!

DALEK 3
IT HAS ALREADY ACTIVATED.

38. INT. TIME CORRIDOR TERMINAL (NIGHT)

The Doctor and Kamelion are bathed in the red glow and they disappear.

39. INT. RECEPTION AREA (NIGHT)

The Dalek studies the burnt control.

DALEK 1
ORDER RE-CIRCUITING OF TERMINAL SHUTTER.

DALEK 2
I OBEY.

40. INT. WAREHOUSE – LOWER LEVEL (NIGHT)

The red glow deposits the Doctor and Kamelion in the empty, sealed off area. They immediately hurry for cover. The Doctor points at the TARDIS, which is now visible to them. The Doctor smiles at Kamelion and the duo hurry over to it.

41. INT. WAREHOUSE – UPPER LEVEL (NIGHT)

It is now total mayhem. There is the constant sound of Dalek firing and there are flashes of negative light rapidly, interspersed with explosions. Archer, Galloway and Calder are hiding by a crate. Archer raises a grenade, pulls the pin and drops it into the box. They hurl the crate across the floor into the middle of the fighting.

ARCHER
Down!

They duck. There is a sheet of flame, and two Daleks are caught. They explode spectacularly. The soldiers turn and see another Dalek gliding down the edges of the warehouse straight towards them.

ARCHER
Run!

Galloway runs for the door as Archer opens fire. The Dalek fires and Calder is struck. He screams and falls to the floor. The eyestalk explodes as Archer continues firing.

DALEK
I CANNOT SEE! MY VISION IS IMPAIRED!

GALLOWAY
Come on, Colonel!

The blinded Dalek spins towards the source of the voice and fires once.

42. INT. WAREHOUSE ENTRANCE (NIGHT)

Galloway is bathed in the lethal glow and, screaming, falls back over the rail and crumples in a heap on the floor below. We pan across to the doorway where the Doctor and Kamelion are standing. They look down at him sadly.

43. INT. WAREHOUSE – UPPER LEVEL (NIGHT)

The blinded Dalek swings to face Archer when a stray energy beam impales it. As it explodes, Archer gets to his feet and runs for cover. But he runs straight past another Dalek which shoots him in the side. Archer lets out a horrible, undignified scream and collapses, clawing at his face as he falls to the ground. Archer moans once more and relaxes in death. He has fallen nearby the sprawled body of Lytton. Who suddenly cracks open his eyes and peers out into the carnage.

44. EXT. WAREHOUSE DISTRICT (NIGHT)

The Doctor carefully pushes open a door and looks around. Just as he is about to step out, he freezes. Further up the road is a Dalek, facing the two policemen.

DALEK
ANY HUMANOIDS WHO ESCAPE THIS WAREHOUSE ARE TO BE EXTERMINATED!

The policemen nod. The Doctor scrambles back inside, but has not been spotted.

45. INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (NIGHT)

As before.

TURLOUGH
If we head out there now we’ll all get killed!

LAIRD
We’ve got to help the Colonel!

TURLOUGH
He knew what the risks were, he told us to stay here!

TEGAN
They might need our help.

TURLOUGH
Or they might be suffering rigor mortis!

The doors open and the Doctor and Kamelion enter.

TEGAN
Doctor!

She embraces him.

TEGAN
Thank God you’re safe.

A bit embarrassed, he pats her reassuring on the shoulder.

DOCTOR
Of course we are, Tegan.

TURLOUGH
What about the others?

KAMELION
They remained on Cassius Four.

LAIRD
Now you’re here, we can go after the Colonel.

DOCTOR
Don’t.

The tone in his voice stops them all. Tegan releases the Doctor.

TEGAN
They’re dead, aren’t they?

KAMELION
I cannot detect their mental signatures. I am sorry, Ms. Jovanka.

DOCTOR
We can make sure they didn’t die for nothing. Kamelion?

Kamelion hands him the canister.

LAIRD
What’s that?

DOCTOR
A canister of the Movellan virus, specifically engineered to wipe out all Dalek life in the immediate vicinity.

TURLOUGH
You could cause an epidemic with that!

DOCTOR
Oh, the virus is harmless on all other life forms, isn’t that right Kamelion?

KAMELION
Yes, Doctor. No non-Dalek casualties of QX345 have ever been recorded.

DOCTOR
Perfect. Now, pop outside and tear open that fireplace, would you? Turlough, go with him and keep his mind on the task at hand.

Turlough and Kamelion exit.

TEGAN
What’s happening up on the next floor?

The Doctor smacks the end of the cylinder.

DOCTOR
Lunch has arrived for our friend here.

Tegan looks at him in horror. The Doctor notices.

DOCTOR
Too many people have died for us to be squeamish, Tegan. If there was another way, you know I’d take it.

TEGAN
But you’re not even looking for one!

The Doctor sounds disgusted and bitter.

DOCTOR
I looked for one on Sea Base Four and how did that turn out?

TEGAN
That’s just... rabbits!

DOCTOR
As maybe, but whether you like it or not it is going to be done!

46. INT. WAREHOUSE – LOWER LEVEL (NIGHT)

Turlough and Kamelion stand by the old fireplace beside the office.

TURLOUGH
Ready?

KAMELION
Of course, Mr. Turlough. Although I must admit to being a trifle insulted by the Doctor’s insistence that you accompany me.

TURLOUGH
It’s because you can’t be trusted.

Kamelion effortlessly rips the frame off the wall and throws it to one side.

KAMELION
I did rescue the Doctor.

TURLOUGH
You also ran out on Tegan and me – and killed that trooper. You really are a nasty piece of work. The Doctor told me that Xeraphas was a lifeless ball of rock – we should have dumped you back there. At least you wouldn’t have caused any more trouble.

KAMELION
Very well, Mr. Turlough.

TURLOUGH
Cut the hurt-little-robot routine. It doesn’t become you.

KAMELION
On the contrary, I think it suits me rather well... Junior Ensign Commander.

Turlough looks at Kamelion with rabid paranoia.

TURLOUGH
And you can keep out of my mind while you’re at it!

KAMELION
I detect hostility in your thought patterns, Vislor Turlough.

TURLOUGH
You won’t dare tell the Doctor about that!

Kamelion kneels down and fingers the brickwork.

KAMELION
If your mind was stronger, you could be assured of the fact.

Turlough speaks in a dangerous whisper.

TURLOUGH
If you say one word about the Custodians to the Doctor, I’ll destroy you.

KAMELION
I never doubted it.

Kamelion tugs some more bricks from a hole near ground level. He exerts no strength at all – unlike Turlough who is struggling to clear the loose mortar. The Doctor, Tegan and Laird emerge from the TARDIS.
LAIRD
What good will this do?

DOCTOR
You’ll notice the rain has left puddles everywhere – that’s because this warehouse is decayed at the edges. With this in the ventilation system, the gas will spread right through this building and wipe out every Dalek within.

TURLOUGH
If you can get it to work?

The Doctor arches an eyebrow. Then he smacks one end of the cylinder and runs a hand across the topmost face, this time pulling back a small square hatch. Inside is a small valve.

DOCTOR
Seems simple enough, don’t you think?

He twists the valve and a thin stream of white smoke emerges. Holding the cylinder at arms’ length the Doctor places the cylinder inside the hole. It is now giving off more and more smoke. The Doctor turns to the others.

DOCTOR
Let’s get out of here, shall we?

Turlough and Kamelion enter the TARDIS. Laird shakes her head.

LAIRD
This is mass slaughter!

DOCTOR
No, that is what will happen if any Daleks leave this warehouse. Davros or the Supreme Dalek, whoever wins, we lose! That virus will wipe every last one out and once it’s done that is programmed to die out.

TEGAN
Just like the hexachromite.

The Doctor glares sharply at Tegan.

DOCTOR
You know nothing about the Daleks, Tegan! There’s nothing to reason with, nothing good about them. If we don’t kill them then they will kill us.

LAIRD
Do you have to be so callous about it?!

TEGAN
She’s right. First you murder someone, now mass gassings?

DOCTOR
Tegan, I didn’t...

At that moment, the door explodes and a Dalek glides through.

DALEK
EXTERMINATE ALL HUMANS!

It fires a shot. Tegan, further from the others, ducks around a corner into the unsealed chamber as the Doctor and Laird are caught in plain sight. Laird hurls the Doctor through the doors and makes a break for it. The Dalek fires. The beam slams into Laird, who lets out a shrill scream and collapses, face first on the floor. She’s dead.

TEGAN
NO!

Tegan runs over to Laird and looks her over in horror. The Dalek glides forward towards them. Gas is now spreading from the hole in the wall. Tegan looks up, furious.

TEGAN
Why did you do that?! She couldn’t have hurt you!

DALEK
ALL INFERIOR BEINGS MUST BE EXTERMINATED! ONLY DALEK LIFE IS REQUIRED!

The gas is now surrounding them both. It’s POV: the bulls-eye of Tegan’s face suddenly distorts badly.

DALEK
EMERGENCY! MALFUNCTION! MALFUNCTION!

The image breaks up completely and goes dark. Normal: The Dalek begins to screech and sways from side to side. The Doctor sprints through the smoke.

DOCTOR
Tegan!

DALEK
I CANNOT SEE! MY VISION IS IMPAIRED! MALFUNCTION! EMERGENCY! EMER-MER-GEN-GEN...

The Doctor grabs Tegan’s hand and hauls her to her feet. They run over to the TARDIS. The Dalek spins to follow them, but suddenly can’t seem to stop itself.

DALEK
EXTER-EX-STAR-STARRRRRRR-STAR-MEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNN-AAAAAAAA....

It comes to a halt, its voice an unintelligible slur that fades to silence as its lights goes out. There is a muffled grunting, thumping from within. Then, its eyestalk slowly moves up 90 degrees and stays there, eye rolled back in death.

47. INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (NIGHT)

The Doctor hurries inside, supporting Tegan who looks stunned.

DOCTOR
Close the doors!

Turlough does so. Kamelion opens the scanner.

KAMELION
The QX345 is already taking affect. That Dalek is now dead.

TURLOUGH
And the Professor?

The Doctor shakes his head.

DOCTOR
Tegan? Are you all right?

Tegan has a lost expression on her face.

KAMELION
The gas will be spreading to the upper level by now. We are winning, Mr. Turlough.

Turlough speaks bitterly.

TURLOUGH
We’re surviving. There’s no such thing as winning.

48. INT. WAREHOUSE – LOWER LEVEL (NIGHT)

The Dalek stands inert. Laird’s body is slowly lost by the swimming clouds of thick white gas that coils and rolls. Soon the Dalek is lost in it as well.

49. INT. WAREHOUSE – UPPER LEVEL (NIGHT)

The gas is already seeping from the grilles in the brickwork. As it thickens we see scattered between the bodies of the soldiers and troopers are several exploded Dalek remnants. Daleks are gliding back and forth from behind pillars and taking shots. Near the exit, a Dalek breaks cover and exterminates a trooper. Lying on the floor, Lytton suddenly comes to life, leaps to his feet and sprints towards the door. He skids to a halt as Kiston emerges from the shadows, gun aimed.

KISTON
Stand still.

LYTTON
Kiston. It’s me. Gustave!

Kiston aims the gun at Lytton’s head. Suddenly there is a strangled Dalek cry and they both look across the room. The Dalek nearest the gas is beginning to sway and jerk uncontrollably, its eye-stalk swinging in every direction.

DALEK 1
ALERT! MALFUNCTION! MALFUNCTION! CRITICAL MAL-MALFUNCTION-TION!

Another Dalek spins and takes aim at the ailing Dalek.

DALEK 1
ANALYSIS-SIS-SIS CON-CONFIRMS! MOVELLAN VIRUS! ALERRRT.... ARGH! AGH!

The Dalek fires. The diseased Dalek explodes spectacularly. Another Dalek glides from behind it and aims at the second Dalek. It begins to convulse as well.

DALEK 2
WHAT IS HAPPENING? I CANNOT SEE! EMERGENCY! EM-EMERGENCY!

The smoke is spreading thicker and thicker. The Daleks stop firing and begin to sway, as if lost. More smoke floods from the vents.

DALEK VOICES
MY VISION IS IMPAIRED! I CANNOT SEE! EMERGENCY! VIRUS DETECTED IN ATMOSPHERE! RETREAT! WITHDRAW! I CAN-NO-CANNOT SEE! ARGHH! EMERGENCY! WITHDRAW! EXTERMINATE! WI-WITHDRAW!

Several Daleks are jerking and swaying, as if unable to control themselves. One starts to scream and then its eyestalk jams upwards and its limbs point to the floor. One Dalek, seemingly unaffected, glides for the loading doors.

DALEK 3
WITHDRAW! ALERT! CONTAMINATION! CONTAMIN-MIN-MIN-ARGHHHH!

The Dalek suddenly spins violently on the spot before slowing down, making the same squawking noise. Another Dalek dies. The two troopers watch on as the background cacophony is slowly drowned out with screams.

KISTON
What’s happening to them?

LYTTON
They’re dying. And so are you.

Without taking his eyes of the display, Lytton casually fires over his shoulder. Struck in the chest, Kiston is slammed against a crate and falls heavily at the trooper. The nearest Dalek swings and faces him, gun aimed.

DALEK 4
EX-EX-EXTERMINATE! EXT-ER-EXTER-EX-EX—ARRGH...

It fires a shot, but the bolt misses Lytton completely. Its gun stick makes a pained clicking noise. The Dalek begins to swing left and right, grating and gasping. Without changing expression, Lytton turns and strides out. The Dalek continues to convulse.

DALEK VOICES
CONTAMINATION IRREVERSIBLE! EXTERMINATE! ARGH!! EXTER-TER-TER-ARRRRGHHH!

50. INT. WAREHOUSE ENTRANCE (NIGHT)

Lytton strides down the steps, into the thickening mist. He slings the pack from his shoulders and takes out the police sergeant’s cap. He looks at it thoughtfully and polishes the insignia with his elbow.

51. INT. WAREHOUSE – UPPER LEVEL (NIGHT)

The gas is getting thicker. All the Daleks are now affected, swaying and convulsing, some screaming insanely, others slurring to a halt. Only one Dalek is still speaking clearly.

DALEK 4
EMERGENCY! I CANNOT SEE! EMERGENCY! EM-MER-EMER-EMERGENCY! I... ARGH!

We pay attention to the Dalek that tried to kill Lytton. It is now lifeless and inert. We see its grille section is now beginning to dissolve, as if acid has been poured over it. As we see this, the other Daleks lose the power of speech and just scream.

52. INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (NIGHT)

Tegan stands in a corner, as if composing herself. Turlough and Kamelion watch her out the corner of their eyes, concern on their faces. The Doctor is staring at the scanner, which shows the Daleks lost in the lethal fog.

DOCTOR
I think that’s that.

He sounds grateful. He adjusts a control and the scanner closes.

TURLOUGH
It’s over?

DOCTOR
It’s over.

TEGAN
It’s horrible.

The Doctor avoids her gaze, and tries and fails to sound reassuring as he sets controls.

DOCTOR
All the Daleks on Earth are dead, so the Earth and humanity are now safe. Some consolation at least.

KAMELION
What about Davros and the Daleks in the future?

DOCTOR
No doubt we’ll have to deal with them – but later. Much later. At the moment, I think we could all do with a rest.

TURLOUGH
Assuming we can get the TARDIS out of their time corridor.

KAMELION
We can but try.

Still glancing at Tegan worriedly, the Doctor begins adjusting controls.

DOCTOR
So far so good...

The time rotor starts to move.

53. INT. WAREHOUSE – LOWER LEVEL (NIGHT)

The TARDIS slowly fades away, as if swallowed up by the mist.

54. EXT. WAREHOUSE DISTRICT

Not far from the warehouse stand the policeman, standing to attention, staring ahead. Lytton emerges from the shadows, now wearing his police sergeant uniform. He approaches the policemen who slowly turn to look at him. A pause. Suddenly, the policemen salute. Lytton gives a satisfied smile, turns and strides up the street. The policemen follow, and soon we lose the group in the dark. Pan over to the smoke coiling from the open doorway to the warehouse.

55. INT. WAREHOUSE – LOWER LEVEL (NIGHT)

Almost lost in the gas, only a few of the Daleks are still alive – swaying and juddering, lost in their death throes. Their eye stalks point randomly as they moan and grate, voices slurring into silence. One by one they fall inactive and dead. The bodies of the troopers and soldiers are lost in the mist. The only noise is the hissing of the virus.

to be continued...

Warhead of the Daleks XIV

21. INT. WAREHOUSE – LOWER LEVEL (NIGHT)

The air turns red and with a wheezing, groaning sound, the TARDIS materializes.

22. INT. WAREHOUSE – UPPER LEVEL (NIGHT)

The Kamelion duplicates of ‘ARCHER’, ‘MELLOR’ and ‘GALLOWAY’ stand to attention, staring blankly into the middle distance.

‘ARCHER’
The time machine has arrived on the level below.

‘GALLOWAY’
Others are coming.

‘CALDER’
What shall we do?

‘ARCHER’
The Daleks will instruct us. Take cover.

In unison they move behind the various pillars and are lost in the dark.

23. INT. WAREHOUSE – LOWER LEVEL (NIGHT)

Archer emerges from the TARDIS, slightly unsteady.

ARCHER
There’s no sign of them... No sign of anyone.

The others file out of the TARDIS.

KAMELION
What do we do now?

TEGAN
We’ve got to think. Work out some way to help the Doctor.

ARCHER
I hate to say it, but I think the Doctor’s beyond our help. This isn’t just an investigation. I need to contact UNIT HQ, work out something with the Ministry of Defense. If the Daleks use this bridgehead, nothing short of massive troop movements will stop them. We’ll try and find a telephone.

TURLOUGH
This is lunacy! Those killers are still out there!

ARCHER
We have to take that chance. All it needs is for one of us to reach a phone. Code word: ‘Penumbra’. That will give you authority. Are you with me, you two?

Galloway and Calder exchange looks then nod grimly.

LAIRD
I’m coming too.

ARCHER
You’re a civilian, Professor. You stay here with the others – we can’t risk putting all our eggs in one basket. If the Doctor gets back, maybe some other opportunities might arise, but you need to stay out of sight, is that understood?

TURLOUGH
He’s right.

TEGAN
Shut up, Turlough!

ARCHER
Both of you shut up! Those bodysnatchers might hear you! Now the Doctor is UNIT’s scientific adivisor, I outrank him and you and I’m ordering you into that thing!

He points to the TARDIS. After a moment, Kamelion, Turlough then Laird turn. Tegan stands her ground. Archer draws his pistol.

ARCHER
Tegan, we don’t have time for this.

13. INT. WAREHOUSE – UPPER LEVEL (NIGHT)

The group of Daleks and troopers rematerialize in the red glow.

DALEK 1
WHAT HAS HAPPENED?

KISTON
Our arrival has been distorted by the TARDIS. We have undershot the terminal.

DALEK 2
THE TARDIS IS NOT ON THIS LEVEL. WE MUST SEARCH ELSEWHERE.

The Fake Soldiers emerge from the shadows, their guns raised.

‘ARCHER’
Can I help you gentlemen? This is private property.

DALEK 1
WE ARE YOUR MASTERS! STAND ASIDE!

‘ARCHER’
The Supreme Dalek gave no order for your arrival.

DALEK 2
WE WERE SENT BY DAVROS.

DALEK 1
HE IS OUR CREATOR.

KISTON
We shall all obey him.

‘CALDER’
They are rogue units.

‘GALLOWAY’
All rogue units are to be exterminated.

‘ARCHER’
By order of the Supreme Dalek.

DALEK 1
ENOUGH!

The lead Dalek fires a blast at ‘Archer’. He is transfixed in the light, shimmering, flickering and gradually breaking up to reveal the Kamelion android beneath. It lets out a scream that begins with Archer’s voice and ends in a roar of static. The Dalek continues firing.

DALEK 2
EXTERMINATE!

The android glows brightly then explodes spectacularly in a fireball. Circuits and shards of metal fly in all directions. ‘Galloway’ and ‘Calder’ open fire, but the bullets are useless on the Daleks and the troopers. They advance.

DALEKS
EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!

They open fire.

24. EXT. WAREHOUSE DISTRICT (NIGHT)

The POLICEMEN have abandoned their beat and stare up at the warehouse as we hear two more explosions and then silence. A pause. The policemen remove their helmets solemnly, as if in respect.

25. INT. WAREHOUSE – LOWER LEVEL (NIGHT)

The three soldiers and Tegan look upwards.

TEGAN
What was that?

GALLOWAY
I don’t know. Not grenades...

TEGAN
Grenades! I left that ammunition box up there...

CALDER
Sir, that worked against the Dalek. It might give us a chance!

GALLOWAY
Those things are up there as well!

TEGAN
If we used the whole box against them...

ARCHER
It’s worth a try. Good work, Tegan, now get inside!

Tegan’s face falls.

TEGAN
I preferred the Brigadier!

She storms into the police box.

ARCHER
I’ve got a horrible feeling she meant that.

Calder laughs. Archer glares at him.

ARCHER
Come on, you two.

They move out.

26. INT. STYLES’ LABORATORY (NIGHT)

As before. Davros is under guard. The Doctor primes the gun with painful care. Davros seems to swallow with nervousness.

DAVROS
Doctor. We have both been here before. When we first met, on Skaro, you could not bring yourself to kill me, to deactivate my life support system. Could you?

DOCTOR
And when we next met I primed a grenade and clamped it to your wheelchair. I detonated it.

DAVROS
You hesitated! You could not pull the trigger, even from afar! Why should I now believe you have the courage to carry out your action?

The Doctor finishes with the gun.

DOCTOR
I don’t care what you believe Davros. A lot’s happened to me since we last met.

He aims it at Davros’ head.

DOCTOR
He
spared you. I won’t.

Some of Davros’ confidence leaves him. But he speaks calmly.

DAVROS
Listen to me. In your way, you are an ambition man. I know that. We are both renegades...

DOCTOR
Save – your – breath.

27. INT. RECEPTION AREA (NIGHT)

The troopers are all standing outside the terminal. Lytton enters and crosses to the locker to take out a back pack which he slings on. Grogan approaches.

GROGAN
All troopers accounted for – the rest must be with the rogue units on Earth.

LYTTON
Then prepare to move out.

GROGAN
Why have they gone rogue?

LYTTON
We’re being sent to our deaths, Grogan. Maybe the question you should be asking is why haven’t you gone rogue? Into the time corridor!

They move into the doorway.

28. INT. WAREHOUSE – UPPER LEVEL

The Daleks and the troopers loom over the blackened metal remains of the android.

KISTON
The TARDIS must be on the level below.

DALEK 1
WE MUST CAPTURE IT AND RETURN TO DAVROS. MOVE!

They head for the doorway. Suddenly there is a familiar humming and Lytton and his troopers materialize at the far end of the room. Kiston turns to face them.

GROGAN
Kiston, what are you doing here?

Kiston raises his gun and fires. The blast causes Grogan’s helmet to explode outwards and his body staggers before falling over. The three Daleks emerge from the shadows.

LYTTON
Take cover!

The Daleks open fire.

DALEKS
EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!

The troopers scatter, but two are unlucky and are blasted down. The others start opening fire on the Daleks, but the weapons have no real effect on the approaching Daleks. Finally, the combined fire causes one to explode. One of Davros’ troopers is shot down.

29. INT. STYLES LABORATORY (NIGHT)

As before. The Doctor is tense. Taking a deep breath, he moves to the trigger.

DAVROS
You hesitate again, Doctor? If our positions were reversed, you would be dead.

DOCTOR
I lack your practice in killing, Davros.

DAVROS
Yes. You are the Doctor. Just as then, you are soft!

DOCTOR
Am I? If I kill you, Davros, if I kill you that’s it. The Daleks are finished. Killing you isn’t just murder. It’s genocide.

DAVROS
Yet you came here, knowing that?

The Doctor’s not quite keeping himself calm.

DOCTOR
Back at the beginning, on Skaro, I held back from destroying the Daleks. It was a mistake, and millions have died because of it. I am not going to make it again. I can’t let you save the Daleks. So, I’m sorry.

DAVROS
Are you?

DOCTOR
More than you can imagine. Goodbye, Davros.

DAVROS
Kill me and you will regret it, Doctor. The Daleks have failed, they are doomed to extinction. But what will replace them? I believe that I can completely redesign the Daleks. You will of course agree that no technology, no species is inherently evil.

STYLES
Doctor, don’t...

DOCTOR
Shut up. I agree, Davros. What’s your point?

DAVROS
On Skaro, we discussed making the Daleks different. You argued that making them totally ruthless was a mistake. You... were right. They became reliant only on logic, but their ability to cope with creatures who relied on instinct and intuition was restricted! The decision was justified at the times. But not now. I see that. The extant Daleks will be eradicated and we can begin again.

DOCTOR
These new Daleks... they’ll have compassion programmed in, will they?

He’s lowering his gun ever so slightly. If Davros had a face he’d be beaming smugly.

DAVROS
They will recognize the strength that can be drawn from such an emotion.

The Doctor’s face hardens.

DOCTOR
They’ll know what pity is.

DAVROS
Of course.

DOCTOR
Which means they’ll know how to use it against others. You’re just going to make the Daleks more efficient killing machines.

DAVROS
Doctor, if you join me you will have total power at the head of a new Dalek army!

There is no emotion in the Doctor’s voice.

DOCTOR
To be honest, Davros, I wouldn’t know what to do with an army.

He takes aim. Davros is now almost babbling.

DAVROS
The New Daleks will be made a more positive force!

DOCTOR
FOR DESTRUCTION!

DAVROS
THE UNIVERSE IS AT WAR, DOCTOR! Name one planet, one species whose history is not LITTERED with atrocities and ambition for empire.

DOCTOR
You wouldn’t have heard of them.

DAVROS
IT IS A UNIVERSAL WAY OF LIFE!

Davros is screaming. The Doctor is whispering.

DOCTOR
Which I do not accept.

He lowers the gun. Davros still sounds worried.

DAVROS
Then you deny what is real.

DOCTOR
Yes, well, you’ll have plenty of time to think about that and about whether or not this universal war is only kept going by people like you. And if the only way out of the circle of violence is refusal to participate. Mercer, Styles – you can have your prisoner back. Perpetual instatement, I believe it’s called.

DAVROS
No! You can’t!

DOCTOR
The humans sentenced you to it. And you don’t really want to be executed, so what other solution is there?

DAVROS
More cowardice! Your ‘humane’ treatment is in itself a crime!

Mercer places the gun at Davros’ neck.

MERCER
If you want to be shot dead, just ask!

Davros raises the injector and stabs at Mercer. The Doctor fires the gun he carries and the injector explodes. Davros growls, shaking his burnt hand.

STYLES
Try that again and I’ll blow your head off!

30. INT. RECEPTION AREA (NIGHT)

A squad of Daleks is gliding through into the terminal.

DALEK 1
WE ARE READY TO DESCEND.

SUPREME DALEK (VO)
EVERYTHING IN THE WAREHOUSE IS TO BE EXTERMINATED!

DALEK 1
LYTTON AND HIS TROOPERS?

SUPREME DALEK (VO)
THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!

DALEKS
WE OBEY!

The shutter slides closed.

31. WAREHOUSE – UPPER LEVEL (NIGHT)

Kiston and another of Davros’ troopers are the only ones still standing. Together with the two remaining Daleks they approach the remainder of Lytton’s troops.

DALEK 1
EXTERMINATE THEM! EXTERMINATE!

The Daleks open fire. The crate explodes, flinging troopers everywhere. Two of them manage to rise and move, but the Daleks open fire and cut them down. Suddenly, the squad of Daleks materialize before them.

DALEK 4
ALL ENEMIES OF THE DALEKS ARE TO BE EXTERMINATED! ALL TRAITORS WILL BE DESTROYED!

DALEK 2
WE ARE NOT TRAITORS!

DALEK 1
WE SERVE OUR CREATOR, DAVROS!

DALEK 4
THE SUPREME DALEK IS THE RULER OF THE DALEK RACE AND MUST BE OBEYED AT ALL TIMES!

On the far side of the room, the soldiers enter and immediately duck under cover. They listen onwards as the Daleks scream at each other.

DALEK 1
DAVROS MUST BE HONOURED!

DALEK 4
HE MUST BE EXTERMINATED!

DALEK 2
IF THE SUPREME DALEK WISHES OUR EXTERMINATION, THEN WE SHALL EXTERMINATE THE SUPREME DALEK FIRST!

DALEK 4
NOTHING MUST INTERFERE WITH THE TRUE DESTINY OF THE DALEKS!

DALEK 2
THE INVADING DALEKS MUST BE EXTERMINATED!

DALEK 4
THE TRAITORS WILL BE EXTERMINATED FIRST!

DALEK 1
WE ARE NOT TRAITORS!

The Dalek fires once. The leader Dalek is struck and explodes. Carnage breaks out. The other trooper is exterminated, but Kiston runs for it. Beams of blue light flash back and forth as another Dalek is struck and explodes. A beam slams into the wall just behind Galloway and causes another explosion.

CALDER
We’re trapped, Colonel! There’s no way out.

Archer pulls open the box to reveal the explosives.

ARCHER
Then let’s go out with a bang!

32. INT. STYLES’ LABORATORY (NIGHT)

The Doctor drops the rifle on the floor and wipes his hands with a handkerchief. Kamelion, Styles and Mercer are aiming their weapons at Davros.

DOCTOR
Somehow I don’t think you can be rehabilitated Davros. Maybe another few centuries in suspended animation might make you grow up. In the meantime, sweet dreams.

The Doctor turns and strides for the door. He takes out his hat and unfurls it.

DAVROS
And what about the Daleks?

DOCTOR
Oh I’ll stop them. But I’m not going to wipe them out. Ironic, isn’t it – because that’s what you were going to do, wasn’t it? Goodbye Davros. It hasn’t been pleasant.

Putting on his hat, he opens the door. A Dalek stands there.

DALEK
EXTERMINATE!

The Doctor dives for cover. The Dalek fires. The bolt strikes the dome containing the canister and it shatters, with a cloud of smoke. Kamelion gasps in pain and clutches his head. Mercer fires a volley of shots at the Dalek, to no avail.

DALEK
EXTERMINATE ALL HUMANS!

Kamelion is shimmering. He returns to his human form. With a howl of pain, Kamelion tackles the Dalek, which spins and throws him across the room. Kamelion manages to roll out of the way before the Dalek fires and there is another explosion. The Dalek spins again, then swings back, as if dizzy.

DALEK
EXTERMINATE ALL HUMANS! WHAT... WHAT IS... HAP-HAP-HAPPENING?! MALFUNCTION!

DOCTOR
It’s the virus!

DALEK
ALERT! EM-EM-EMERGEN-GENCY! ARGH! MALFUNCTION! MALFUNCTION! ARRGGHHH!

The Dalek is juddering and convulsing. Davros sounds intrigued.

DAVROS
The Movellan Warhead unleashed.

The Dalek twitches, jerks, letting out a choking, gurgling gasp. The smoke drifts out of it and with a final scream its eye stalk jams upwards and it goes still. The Doctor carefully rises and approaches the Dalek.

DOCTOR
It’s dead. Now that virus has been released it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the Daleks on the station are wiped out.

STYLES
Their troopers are immune, though. And they could leave the station and shoot us down!

KAMELION
Then we’ve got to get out of here.

DOCTOR
The time corridor, it’s our only chance!

MERCER
You can go if you like.

STYLES
Mercer, don’t be an idiot.

MERCER
Standing orders! The Prisoner cannot be allowed to fall into enemy hands.

STYLES
So shoot him and be done with it!

The group has moved to the far side of the room. Davros flips a switch. The lab door slides down, shutting them out. He gurgles, now alone in the room with the mist.

33. INT. CASSIUS FOUR CORRIDORS (NIGHT)

Mercer bangs his fist against the wall, furious.

MERCER
I’m an imbecile.

STYLES
We’ll never get through there.

KAMELION
And there are bound to be more Daleks on their way here.

STYLES
Won’t the virus affect them?

DOCTOR
Most of it is trapped behind the door. It must be self-eliminating.

MERCER
Then there’s only one thing we can do.

STYLES
What?

MERCER
The self-destruct. It’s still primed, isn’t it?

The Doctor’s anger starts to show.

DOCTOR
No one is going to thank you for throwing your life away!

MERCER
I’m not in this for glory! Thirty people are dead because he was here – how many more are going to die if he escapes? I’m not letting that on my conscience. Doctor, you go and get out of here while you can.

DOCTOR
Roylan, please...

MERCER
Do it.

The Doctor sighs, beaten. He holds out his hand.

DOCTOR
If you find some way out, then take it. Please.

MERCER
I will.

DOCTOR
... Good luck.

STYLES
I’m staying.

DOCTOR
What? This is suicidal!

STYLES
Even so, I have security clearance. Mercer won’t manage it without my help. This way I’ll get to leave this place early.

MERCER
Thanks.

STYLES
Don’t mention it.

They turn and hurry off. The Doctor watches them, helpless.

DOCTOR
No, there’s been enough killing today! Mercer! Styles!

STYLES
Get out while you can, Doctor!

The Doctor turns and looks at Kamelion.

DOCTOR
This used to be such fun. Was it always this nasty?

Kamelion shrugs. The Doctor turns and shouts up at the communicator.

34. INT. STYLES’ LABORATORY (NIGHT)

The screen shows the Doctor and Kamelion.

DOCTOR
Well, Davros. It looks like we’ve both lost. Your little time war can’t happen now!

They turn and walk off. Davros turns away.

DAVROS
If that were true, Doctor, you would not sound so disturbed. Once the Daleks are aware of the situation, the crewmembers will be exterminated. And when I open this hatch to release the Movellan virus, I shall have sole control of the time corridor! The New Order begins here!

He glides past the Dalek. It is now hideously melted and distorted, as if dipped in acid.

DAVROS
The Daleks will die! Long live the new Daleks!

to be continued...

Warhead of the Daleks XIII

(ROLL OPENING CREDITS)
(WARHEAD OF THE DALEKS)
(PART FOUR)

1. INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (NIGHT)

The room is packed – THE DOCTOR, TEGAN, TURLOUGH, KAMELION, ARCHER, CALDER, GALLOWWAY, LAIRD, STYLES and MERCER. The Doctor pulls the door control and they open.

ARCHER
Where are you going?

The Doctor turns to face him, his expression unreadable.

DOCTOR
I’m going to see Davros.

TURLOUGH
And then what?

DOCTOR
I’m going to kill him.

TEGAN
Doctor!

DOCTOR
I must! Davros created the Daleks and he is the only person who can save them – and once they rebuild their forces then the universe will suffer the consequences. I can’t allow that to happen!

TEGAN
But it can’t be worth murder!

DOCTOR
Can’t it? If the Daleks start a war with the Time Lords, the death toll will be incalculable! The entire continuum will be torn apart because of it – look at that time corridor out there. Crude, unreliable, inefficient – as transport. As a weapon, as the temporal equivalent of a chainsaw. They could cancel out anything after 1984!

TEGAN
And if you kill Davros, what then?!

KAMELION
The Daleks will be crippled, on the verge of total extinction.

DOCTOR
Precisely, Kamelion.

STYLES
Sounds like a good deal to me.

LAIRD
It’s genocide!

DOCTOR
Once before I held back from destroying the Daleks. It was a mistake I do not intend to repeat. Davros must die.

TEGAN
You’re going to kill a blind, one-armed cripple in a wheelchair?! In cold blood!

The Doctor gives her a haunted look.

DOCTOR
I spared his life the first time we met, and every dead body on this station is a direct consequence of that. How many more have to die before it becomes too much? How many?

Tegan can’t answer.

2. INT. STYLES LABORATORY (NIGHT)

DAVROS is studying the dome, now full of the white smoke. The TROOPERS and DALEKS are present, while KISTON stands to one side.

DAVROS
The cure is simple. So obvious. The true Daleks would have discovered it by now.

KISTON
What is the cure?

DAVROS
A concentrated burst of hard radiation. It will de-program the virus, render it harmless to all life forms. But no matter. On my order, the virus is to be pumped into the prison ventilation system. All non-aligned Daleks will be destroyed. You will then capture the Dalek ship – any and all who resist are to be exterminated. Once the virus has done its work, we shall begin again.

Kiston places a hand to his temple.

KISTON
Priority command.

DAVROS
Well?

KISTON
The Doctor has escaped the Mind Analysis chamber.

DAVROS
What? How?

KISTON
Unknown. All troopers have begun searching the station for him.

DAVROS
The Doctor’s companions must have come to his aide. He will try and flee the station, if only to take those companions out of danger. Then he may return. We cannot take the risk! The Doctor cannot be allowed to return to his time machine!

DALEK 1
HIS LOCATION IS UNKNOWN!

DAVROS
And what about the location of his time machine?

DALEK 2
THAT IS LOCATED IN THE RECEPTION AREA OUTSIDE THE TIME CORRIDOR TERMINAL.

DAVROS
Excellent.

3. INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (NIGHT)

The Doctor is setting controls on the console.

DOCTOR
There. Time I went.

MERCER
I’m coming with you.

DOCTOR
No.

MERCER
I can show you where he is!

STYLES
I’m coming too. I wouldn’t mind a taste of revenge.

DOCTOR
You think this is about revenge?

STYLES
He’s using my laboratory without permission. That’s just not something you forgive. Besides, I know the override code on the door.

MERCER
And how are you going to face him? Wander up? He’ll be suspicious.

CALDER
Maybe you could pretend to be prisoner and escort or something?

STYLES
Sounds good to me.

DOCTOR
We’ll need uniforms. There’s spare trooper armor across the reception area.

KAMELION
You’ll need me, Doctor.

TURLOUGH
Don’t be stupid, Doctor, you can’t possibly trust him!

KAMELION
I know all the security subroutines of the Dalek craft, and can impersonate any of the human officers with a thought.

TEGAN
You went over to the Daleks’ side!

KAMELION
Not by choice.

TEGAN
No one mentioned choice, but you’re still unreliable.

KAMELION
This time he Doctor is prepared to expand his mental defenses to include me. If not, both Ms. Styles and Mr. Mercer are armed and know what to expect.

TEGAN
Doctor...

He ignores her and looks hard at Kamelion.

DOCTOR
All right. Wait as long as you can. But should the Daleks attack, you leave at once.

TEGAN
But what about you?!

DOCTOR
The coordinates are already set. You’re in charge once you get to Earth, Colonel.

Archer salutes him.

ARCHER
Good luck, Doctor.

The Doctor doesn’t even look at him as he leaves.

4. INT. RECEPTION AREA (NIGHT)

The Doctor, Mercer, Kamelion and Styles leave the TARDIS and cross over to a doorway in an alcove. The Doctor opens the door and it slides back to reveal the TROOPER Lytton sent. He raises his hands. Mercer and Styles follow suit as they are herded into the middle of the chamber. Kamelion stays in the shadows.

DOCTOR
Ah. So sorry about this, we were just looking for a change of clothes...

The trooper raises his gun to the level of the Doctor’s face. There is a volley of shots. The trooper staggers, spins around... and Kamelion fires again. The trooper collapses, dead. Kamelion blows across the barrel. Mercer and Styles relax.

MERCER
Don’t leave it so late next time!

Styles strides into the armory locker.

DOCTOR
That wasn’t necessary! We didn’t need to kill him!

KAMELION
Neither did we need him alive, Doctor.

The Doctor is furious.

DOCTOR
Kamelion...

STYLES
Doctor?

DOCTOR
What?!

STYLES
There are only two suits.

DOCTOR
Oh, I don’t think that would prove a problem, should it Kamelion?

Kamelion lowers the gun and is bathed in a shimmering glow. He transforms into a perfect copy of Grogan.

KAMELION-GROGAN
I believe this should suffice.

Styles and Mercer exchange looks.

5. INT. STYLES LABORATORY (NIGHT)

Kiston is pulling on his helmet. Behind him stand the three Daleks and the troopers, lined up as if for military inspection. Davros faces them.

DAVROS
You must secure the Doctor’s time machine. You and the troopers will achieve this. Exterminate those aboard. Once that is done I shall release the virus into the atmosphere. Any Daleks outside the TARDIS will die.

KISTON
Surely you too will be at risk.

DAVROS
I am not a Dalek! Their genetic legacy is separated from mine by millions of your years – they are more machine than flesh, glorified robots with the hatred only organics possess! The virus was designed for them, not I. Now, go.

DALEKS
WE OBEY.

All bar three troopers and Davros turn and leave.

6. INT. CASSIUS FOUR CORRIDORS (NIGHT)

The group moves down the corridors and out of sight. In a side tunnel stand LYTTON, GROGAN and several other troopers.

LYTTON
I wonder where they are going?

GROGAN
Perhaps Davros is sending them out to look for that Doctor.

LYTTON
Perhaps. Perhaps Davros has another agenda.

GROGAN
Should we report this to the Daleks?

LYTTON
Oh, no, we don’t want to show any independent thought. Keep searching.

They move off.

7. INT. CASSIUS FOUR AIRLOCK (NIGHT)

Kamelion-Grogan marches out of the airlock, followed by the Doctor, who is flanked on both sides by Mercer and Styles – now unrecognizable in Dalek Trooper armor. They move down through the corridors out of sight.

8. INT. STYLES’ LABORATORY (NIGHT)

This is shown on the scanner.

DAVROS
The Doctor and his machine. Perfect.

9. INT. CASSIUS FOUR CORRIDORS (NIGHT)

The group approaches Styles’ lab. The Doctor looks almost unwell. Styles notices as they come to a halt outside the door.

STYLES
You sure you can do this?

DOCTOR
No. Let’s find out.

10. INT. STYLES’ LABORATORY (NIGHT)

The door rises up as the Doctor, Styles, Mercer and Kamelion enter. The door closes. Davros revolves to face them, quite relaxed.

DAVROS
Ah, Doctor. It was a pity you destroyed the recording of your mind. You shall now have to undergo the process again. Perhaps this should be counted as a happy accident.

DOCTOR
It won’t work, Davros.

DAVROS
Oh but it shall.

DOCTOR
Things have spiraled out of your control! As they always do!

Davros gives out an amused noise.

DAVROS
My forces are already capturing your machine! With that under our control and detailed knowledge of the changes made to history, we shall restore the pattern of events back to their rightful course. The Daleks shall be remade! I, Davros, shall be their leader – and this time we shall triumph, not only over the cosmos but the Time Lords as well. My Daleks shall become the Supreme Race of the universe!

DOCTOR
You declare war on the Time Lords and you unleash forces you cannot even comprehend!

DAVROS
Only the beginning, Doctor! THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING!

The Doctor suddenly looks so tired.

DOCTOR
Oh, no, Davros. This is where it ends.

11. INT. RECEPTION AREA (NIGHT)

Davros’ forces enter the chamber.

DALEK 1
FIRE NEUTRALIZERS – MAXIMUM POWER.

The Daleks aim their gun sticks and fire their beams so they meet over the lock on the TARDIS door. There is a loud crackle of energy and some sparks but no more.

DALEK 1
FIRE!

Same result.

DALEK 2
CONTINUOUS FIRE!

12. INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (NIGHT)

There is the background noise of the Dalek firepower. Turlough looks at the scanner. It shows the Daleks outside.

GALLOWAY
They’re trying to break in!

TURLOUGH
That’s it!

Turlough moves around the console and starts to set controls.

TEGAN
Turlough, don’t!

TURLOUGH
The Doctor will never get back! Face it, Tegan! We’ve lost this game!

Tegan grabs him and hauls him from the controls, Turlough crying out in pain.

TURLOUGH
You stupid woman!

He shakes himself free, furious.

TURLOUGH
He told us to leave!

LAIRD
He’s right, we’ve got get out now!

TEGAN
Don’t look so worried. Others have tried to break in before!

There is a sudden silence and then a very loud blasting noise. The room trembles.

ARCHER
I hate to retreat, but there doesn’t seem any alternative!

TEGAN
We’re staying!

Suddenly there is a chiming from the console.

CALDER
What’s that?

The time rotor starts to rise and fall.

LAIRD
What’s happening?

TEGAN
We’re taking off!

13. INT. RECEPTION AREA (NIGHT)

The TARDIS dematerializes as the Daleks open fire. It fades from sight and their laser beams strike the wall behind, causing explosions.

DALEK 2
CEASE FIRING!

DALEK 1
ACTIVATE THE TEMPORAL SCANNER!

The Dalek crosses to the controls beside the time corridor shutter.

14. INT. STYLES’ LABORATORY (NIGHT)

The Dalek’s voice is heard, heavily distorted over the communicator.

DALEK (VO)
DAVROS...

DAVROS
Report!

DALEK (VO)
THE TARDIS HAS ENTERED THE TIME CORRIDOR.

DAVROS
Then it will arrive at the other end of the corridor. Follow it and capture it on Earth!

DALEK (VO)
WE OBEY!

The guard switches off the communicator.

DOCTOR
See? Things are falling apart, Davros. Once again.

Davros whirls to face the others.

DAVROS
A temporary setback, Doctor. You however, will not live to learn how temporary!

15. INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (NIGHT)

As before. Turlough brings up a display on the monitor.

TURLOUGH
Well, it seems the Doctor’s built in a timer control. I think I know how it works...

TEGAN
Who cares about that? Takes us back!

TURLOUGH
I can’t - the Doctor’s pre-set it.

Tegan is shocked.

TEGAN
But that means he’s stranded there!

GALLOWAY
If he’s still alive.

ARCHER
Galloway!

GALLOWAY
I’m sorry, but I don’t think he intended to come back, do you?

LAIRD
Are we going to Earth?

TURLOUGH
I can’t think of anywhere else he’d send us...

Suddenly, the room lurches violently. Only Turlough and Laird are able to hang onto the console as the horrible straining noises of the engines are heard.

TURLOUGH
Well, now we know!

CALDER
What?

TURLOUGH
He’s sent us travelling down the time corridor!

CALDER
But that means we’ll end up back at the warehouse!

TURLOUGH
I KNOW!

There is another, more violent lurch.

16. INT. RECEPTION AREA (NIGHT)

The Dalek draws back its sucker arm as the shutter rises. It glides into the terminal chamber, followed by the troopers and remaining two Daleks.

17. INT. FLIGHT DECK (NIGHT)

Lytton enters and activates the crystal sphere. The ‘face’ of the SUPREME DALEK appears within it.

SUPREME DALEK
SPEAK!

LYTTON
The Doctor has already been taken prisoner and is now with Davros.

SUPREME DALEK
WE ARE AWARE OF THIS!

LYTTON
I was not! If you can’t keep us updated with all relevant information, we cannot serve the Daleks to the best...

18. INT. QUARANTINE CHAMBER (NIGHT)

Continuous. A Dalek swings its dome around while its body continues to face controls.

DALEK 1
NEW DATA FROM TIME SENSORS - THE TIME CORRIDOR HAS BEEN ACTIVATED.

SUPREME DALEK
I GAVE NO SUCH ORDER!

DALEK 1
DATA SUGGESTS THREE DALEKS AND SEVERAL TROOPERS ARE TRAVELLING DOWN THE CORRIDOR.

The Supreme Dalek swings its eyestalk to face Lytton’s image in the sphere.

SUPREME DALEK
IS THIS YOUR DOING?!

LYTTON
No! I have no part in this. They must have gone rogue.

DALEK 2
KISTON IS RECORDED AS ONE OF THE TROOPERS.

SUPREME DALEK
HE IS UNRELIABLE! HE CANNOT BE TRUSTED! YOU MUST FOLLOW THEM AND EXTERMINATE THEM ALL!

LYTTON
The androids are already waiting at the other end for them. Don’t waste my time!

DALEK 1
SENSOR ANALYSIS CONFIRMS THE DOCTOR’S TARDIS IS NOW IN THE TIME CORRIDOR!

LYTTON
Then the Doctor’s companions must have regained control of it.

The Supreme Dalek sounds almost happy.

SUPREME DALEK
YOUR TROOPERS HAVE FAILED! YOU MUST REDEEM YOURSELF!

19. INT. FLIGHT DECK (NIGHT)

Continuous.

LYTTON
And how am I supposed to do that?!

SUPREME DALEK
YOU MUST FOLLOW THE ROGUES TO EARTH, ENSURE THEY ARE EXTERMINATED AND RECAPTURE THE DOCTOR’S TARDIS. YOU WILL OBEY!

Lytton’s insolence fades to a look of thoughtfulness.

LYTTON
Yes. Of course. You can trust me. Just like I trust you.

Lytton turns and leaves.

19. INT. QUARANTINE CHAMBER (NIGHT)

The image fades from the sphere.

SUPREME DALEK
ONCE LYTTON HAS SUCCEEDED, HE AND HIS TROOPERS ARE TO BE EXTERMINATED!

DALEK 1
WE MAY STILL REQUIRE THE TROOPERS.

SUPREME DALEK
WHEN WE ARE IMMUNE TO THE VIRUS, TROOPERS WILL NO LONGER BE NEEDED!

DALEK 2
BUT IF DAVROS FAILS...

The Supreme Dalek is now ranting almost insanely.

SUPREME DALEK
DAVROS WILL NOT FAIL! WE WILL TRIUMPH! THE TRUE DESTINY OF THE DALEKS IS TO RULE THE UNIVERSE! WE CANNOT FAIL!

20. INT. STYLES’ LABORATORY (NIGHT)

As before.

DAVROS
This third encounter, fascinating though it has been, shall now end.

DOCTOR
My thoughts exactly.

DAVROS
Take him to the Mind Analysis chamber. Copy his mind again. If he resists before, during or after the process, decapitate him! Do it anyway once it is finished.

Nothing happens.

DAVROS
Obey me!

Silence.

DAVROS
I AM DAVROS! YOU WILL OBEY ME!

Another pause. The Doctor sighs.

DOCTOR
Well? Get on with it.

Styles, Mercer and Kamelion raise their weapons. Davros relaxes.

DAVROS
Good.

The trio open fire. Davros’ troopers are smashed back by the volleys and finally they fall dead to the ground. Davros whirls left and right, unable to believe what has happened. Styles and Mercer approach Davros, guns raised.

DAVROS
What is this? You... Grogan! Kill the Doctor!

The Doctor arches an eyebrow as Kamelion aims the gun at him... then allows the Doctor to take it off him. The Doctor looks it over and peers down the sight at Davros.

DOCTOR
I’m not here as your prisoner, Davros. I’m your executioner.

to be continued...
