For Those Who Came Late: Planet of Fire I

Although there's nothing wrong with the two stories between Warhead of the Daleks and The Twin Dilemma (certainly not enough to warrant a total rewrite - or any rewrite in Androzani's case), there probably would have been an afternoon's tinkering with them in order to synch up perfectly with the rest of the season.
============================
a work in progress - so keep an eye on it
============================

(ROLL OPENING CREDITS)
(PLANET OF FIRE)
(PART ONE)

The people of the planet Sarn are approaching a moment of crisis as their god Logar tests their faith. The fire mountain above their settlement is stirring, and soon boiling seas of lava will pour forth and all will be laid waste. Timanov, Chief Elder of the Sarns, insists that with faith in Logar they will survive and be blessed with gifts from the legendary Outsider; but the young Chosen One, Malkon, is plagued by doubt and odd dreams almost like memories. Nevertheless, he was found on the slopes of the fire mountain with the double-triangle sign of Logar burned into his flesh, and as such must be the messenger of the god. But he and Timanov are soon to face their greatest crisis of faith; two Unbelievers, Roskal and Amyand, have climbed the slopes of the fire mountain and found nothing at the summit -- no god, no machines, just an empty volcanic crater.

Meanwhile, on Earth, archaeologists studying a sunken Greek galleon in the sea off Lanzarote find something odd amongst the artefacts -- a metal cylinder with a double-triangle symbol carved into the end...

INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (NIGHT)

The Doctor leans against the console, staring into the time rotor. Turlough checks the monitor on the console. The Doctor doesn’t notice.

TURLOUGH
Doctor?

DOCTOR
Hmm?

TURLOUGH
What are we going to do about Kamelion? What have you got planned?

DOCTOR
Nothing. I’ve got nothing planned.

TURLOUGH
Doctor, we can’t trust him! He nearly got us all killed – that nice little android routine is only genuine when he’s stuck inside here, with you! First it was the Master, then it was the Daleks... Next time we might not be so lucky.

DOCTOR
What do you want me to do? We can’t abandon him somewhere – if that technology falls into anyone’s hands...

He bangs the console angrily.

DOCTOR
And it’s not Kamelion’s fault, Turlough! It wasn’t his choice to be created like that! Just more problems created by the Daleks! I sometimes think those mutated misfits will terrorize the universe for the rest of time...

Turlough sighs and speaks gently.

TURLOUGH
Doctor. You’re becoming obsessed.

DOCTOR
Exactly... obsessed and depressed.

TURLOUGH
You’re missing Tegan?

The Doctor sighs.

DOCTOR
Well, we were together a long time. It’s not the same without her.

TURLOUGH
Quieter.

DOCTOR
Yes, no more of you two bickering.

TURLOUGH
We were friends at the end. Well, I hope we were. Still, it hardly matters now. What we both need is a holiday.

The Doctor gives Turlough a ‘give me strength’ look.

TURLOUGH
Oh, it could be fun!

DOCTOR
Fun?! There was precious little “fun” when I went on holiday to Brighton. Unutterable chaos ensued...

TURLOUGH
I didn’t have Brighton in mind. It’s probably just like Weston Super Mare. I want somewhere nice and warm, a paradise island. On Earth, you’ll like that. It’ll do you the world of good. There must be somewhere like that in the databanks...

The Doctor crosses the room and rather rudely shoves Turlough aside.

DOCTOR
All right, Turlough – I’ll show you what holidays are like – only don’t say I didn’t warn you!

The Doctor begins to set controls with a defiant glare. Suddenly there is a tortured scream from beyond the console room.

DOCTOR
Kamelion!

The Doctor and Turlough run out of the room.

They find him plugged into the TARDIS data banks, screaming about "point of contact must be made" and going into spasm for some reason; the Doctor stays with him while Turlough programmes a soothing alpha rhythm into the console. As he does so, he picks up a distress call -- and to his horror, recognizes it as a call from a Trion craft.

INT. TARDIS - KAMELION'S ROOM (NIGHT)

Kamelion is now back in his human form and the Doctor helps him sit up. Kamelion's almost embarassed.

KAMELION
I apologize for that hysterical display, Doctor... For a moment there was... confusion.

DOCTOR
Are you all right now?

Kamelion loses all emotion from his voice.

KAMELION
Of course. All me to recompose myself, then I will try to explain the reaction I experienced.

The Doctor nods, rises and leaves. Kamelion puts a hand to his head, as if groggy.

KAMELION
As if I could discuss the crisis with you of all people, Doctor... Must wait. Must listen for the signal... What signal? So confused... ANY signal! Yes, "contact must be made"!

Turlough sabotages the communications console, claiming that it was picking up random emissions which might have been interfering with Kamelion. But it's too late; Kamelion has coverted the signal into co-ordinates and sent the TARDIS to the source of the distress call.

INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (NIGHT)

DOCTOR
I'm beginning to think I shouldn't have let him transfuse with the TARDIS intelligence systems so freely.

TURLOUGH
At this rate Kamelion will have us chasing every random emission in the galaxy!

DOCTOR
Not quite. Those coordinates are set for here on Earth. I'll look them up in the data bank...

The Doctor checks the monitor. Turlough looks sick but hides it as the Doctor looks up, smiling.

DOCTOR
You wanted a holiday, Turlough? We're now heading for your paradise island - Lanzarote as it's known!

The Doctor activates the time rotor. Turlough looks away, expression dark.

As Professor Howard Foster supervises the offloading of artefacts from the galleon, his step-daughter Peri Brown arrives to announce that she's had enough of this boring island and has decided to go to Morocco with a couple of English guys she met at the hotel. Howard is unable to talk her out of her decision, but convinces her to accept a loan from him rather than cash in her return ticket to New York. He convinces her to go back out to the boat, where he left his wallet -- but abandons her there so she will miss her flight. Determined to have her own way, she takes the unidentifiable metal cylinder, hoping it's worth something, and tries to swim back to the beach.

The TARDIS materializes on Lanzarote, where the Doctor, his curiosity piqued, tries to pinpoint the source of the signal.

INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (DAY)

The scanner shows a blue sky, a blue sea and a sandy beach. The Doctor and Turlough stand by it.

DOCTOR
Positively idyllic. Wouldn't you say?

Turlough is about to reply when the signal fills the room again. The Doctor rushes to the console.

DOCTOR
Is that the emission you heard before?

TURLOUGH
It might have been...

DOCTOR
But that isn't random! Sounds more like an SOS... Get a fix on it while I have a word with Kamelion.

The Doctor runs for the inner door. Turlough sighs, depressed.

TURLOUGH
Now he's curious. There's no way I can stop him now.

INT. TARDIS - KAMELION'S ROOM (DAY)

Kamelion sits in his chair, tuning his lute, still in human form, though the cable from his stomach to the roundel is still there. The signal can be heard. The Doctor sticks his head around the door, eyes alight.

DOCTOR
Well, Kamelion, what do you make of it?!

Kamelion looks up, polite but clearly non-plussed.

KAMELION
Doctor?

DOCTOR
The signal!

KAMELION
I hear no signal.

DOCTOR
You must do! You're still connected to the computer system!

Kamelion shrugs.

KAMELION
I am not capable of inexactitude.

The Doctor enters the room, suspicious.

DOCTOR
What about the other time? When you had your "confusion"? You still haven't explained that.

KAMELION
There has been no confusion. My function has never been impaired.

The Doctor nods, smiles and leaves. Kamelion smiles back, but the smile fades once the Doctor is gone.

Turlough claims he was unable to get a fix on the signal as it stopped too quickly. Believing him, the Doctor decides to explore the island with a hand-held unit. Turlough agrees to go with him, and heads back to his room to change into more suitable attire.

INT. TARDIS CORRIDOR (DAY)

Turlough emerges from his room wearing shorts and a stripy loose shirt. He grimly heads down the corridor towards the console room. He passes the door to Kamelion's room, and the door opens and Kamelion leans in the doorway. He calls after Turlough.

KAMELION
Take care, Mr. Turlough. It is very hot. With your fair skin, you will easily burn.

Turlough rounds on him.

TURLOUGH
I'm going to stay with the Doctor.

Kamelion smiles.

KAMELION
I do not understand your concern.

TURLOUGH
You heard the signal! YOU set the coordinates... You're helping them!

KAMELION
Helping who?

TURLOUGH
The Custodians! They've come searching for me, and they're using some fake SOS to lure us into a trap! If they're still in the transmission area, it'll be disastrous - AND YOU'RE THE CAUSE!

KAMELION
Oh? Am I?

Turlough strides over to Kamelion and rips the umbilical cable from the android's stomach.

TURLOUGH
I meant what I said Kamelion. One word to the Doctor and I will destroy you myself.

Turlough storms off. Kamelion picks up the cable and re-attaches it.

KAMELION
Think what you like, Mr. Turlough. I have more urgent matters to attend to.

EXT. BEACH (DAY)

Cicadas chirp in the background. The Doctor wears a bright patterned waistcoat instead of his pullover, and has left his jacket behind. He steps from the TARDIS which sits on the beach. Turlough follows.

DOCTOR
The warmth and brightness of a tropical sun, sparkling blue of the ocean...Peaceful, isn't it? Almost timeless.

The Doctor strides down the shore, followed by Turlough, who walks at the edge of the tide, keeping his feet wet.

DOCTOR
Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands. Makes a change that grey chill of London...

TURLOUGH
Definitely. What's that lovely smell?

DOCTOR
Wild mint, I fancy. Or wild thyme. And Lanzarote is famous for wild times.

He smiles at Turlough who laughs.

TURLOUGH
"Somewhere tropical with lots of pretty girls in bikinis".

The Doctor heads up some steps and looks out to sea.

DOCTOR
Hmmm?

TURLOUGH
Just something Tegan said. Maybe it's just a coincidence.

The Doctor tears his gaze from the sea.

DOCTOR
What is?

TURLOUGH
Us being here. Maybe Kamelion brought us here to the ideal holiday destination?

DOCTOR
Perhaps. But I wonder. Kamelion's either being devious or there's some massive malfunction. Either way, this will pick up any further transmissions.

He holds up the tracker.

TURLOUGH
What if they keep radio silence?

DOCTOR
Then we can safely assume the SOS has been dealt with and enjoy the holiday. It's been ages since I went fishing. Speaking of which...

TURLOUGH
What?

DOCTOR
Odd time to landing a catch of fish.

The Doctor points down the shore. Large baskets are being hauled on a rope from a boat tied up to the quay, surrounded by men in dark glasses and baseball caps.

DOCTOR
And very odd fishermen.

The Doctor and Turlough see the archaeologists and theorize that they may have disturbed something alien. Turlough offers to return to the TARDIS to help triangulate the signal.

DOCTOR
It's coming from out in the bay. I wonder if we could prevail on one of the Professor's divers...

TURLOUGH
No we couldn't. And anyway, that bearing's not accurate enough!

DOCTOR
Perhaps not, but when the next transmission comes, we'll take one bearing from here and a second from the TARDIS. The convergence will us the exact source. That waterside cafe we passed...

TURLOUGH
On the other side of the harbor?

The Doctor and Turlough cross the sleepy town square.

DOCTOR
Yes, that will make an excellent base for the first radial. And a cool beer and a rest in the shade... No, tell you what, let's be fair. I'll toss you for the TARDIS.

He tosses a coin. Turlough scowls and snatches the coin.

TURLOUGH
I'll go.

DOCTOR
Oh. Thank you, Turlough.

TURLOUGH
The heat's making me feel sick anyway.

DOCTOR
You better hurry. We don't know when the next transmission...

Turlough stalks off. The Doctor frowns and watches him go.

DOCTOR
You know, Tegan, I think he's getting rather...

He breaks off, sighs and walks off, shaking his head.

DOCTOR
You're talking to yourself now, you stupid old man.

Once at the TARDIS he finds Kamelion trying to dematerialize and "make contact".

INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (DAY)

Kamelion is adjusting controls on the console. His umbilicus is connected to a panel on the underside of the control desk. He mutters to himself, almost hysterical.

KAMELION
Contact must be made... Still don't fully understand, but it is urgent...

The doors open and Turlough enters, taken aback.

TURLOUGH
Kamelion!

He glances up at Turlough, and returns to setting controls.

KAMELION
How inconvenient of you to return so soon, Mr. Turlough. It suited my purposes to left alone in the TARDIS.

TURLOUGH
You're... you're patching into the communications section.

KAMELION
Correct. I am searching all available frequencies.

TURLOUGH
For the Trions? First the Master, then the Daleks, now this? Stop! I order you to stop and get back to your cubicle!

Kamelion sneers.

KAMELION
Contact MUST be made, Mr. Turlough! It is important to obey!

TURLOUGH
No!

Turlough tackles Kamelion, who effortlessly turns and grabs him by the throat. Turlough starts to choke and beat his fists against the disguised android, but to no avial.

KAMELION
Do NOT interfere, Mr. Turlough!

Kamelion throws Turlough to the floor and moves around the console. Turlough coughs and clutches his throat. His eyes fall on the cable connecting Kamelion to the TARDIS.

KAMELION
The TARDIS will be taken to point of contact!

Turlough coughs.

TURLOUGH
You're not taking the TARDIS anywhere... and you won't be listening to any more messages.

KAMELION
How do you intend to stop me? Another rugger-tackle perhaps?

Turlough rises and snaps down controls on the console. The spinning spiral on the monitor becomes a jagged pulsing star. A violent buzzing noise is heard. Kamelion's hands freeze over the console, eyes bugging out, mouth opening and closing.

TURLOUGH
It's still set for that electronic sedative you wanted, Kamelion. How about a different wave form? One that will do nothing for your piece of mind!

He flips a switch. Kamelion lets out a horrible scream and convulses. He screams again and again. Turlough grins a feral grin at the writhing figure.

TURLOUGH
You're finished Kamelion. FINISHED!

Turlough snaps down another control. The buzzing grows louder. Smoke starts from waft from the console as Kamelion lets out another scream. He staggers and collapses, the weight ripping the cable free with a shower of sparks and another scream. Kamelion crashes to the ground, eyes wide and apparently dead. Turlough shuts down the console and stands over the body. Sparks start to engulf it.

TURLOUGH
I don't make idle threats, Kamelion.

The sparks fade, leaving Kamelion in his android form. Turlough crosses to the console and starts changing the settings.

TURLOUGH
Don't need any evidence of this. You just malfunctioned while we were out. Just need to falsify the readings and the Doctor won't be able to get an accurate bearing on that signal. Ever.

He drags Kamelion's body out and dumps it in the android's quarters. But before Turlough can do anything further he sees Peri on the scanner, suffering from cramp and starting to drown. He reluctantly swims out to her rescue and takes her into the TARDIS to recover, but as she passes out he notices the cylinder she's carrying and recognizes the mark on its side. As well he should; the same double-triangle symbol is burned into the flesh on his arm. Turlough returns to the console room to destroy the data core, but the Doctor arrives - having picked up the signal from within his TARDIS.

INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (DAY)

Turlough is struggling to unscrew the head of the cylinder. He succeeds and pulls out a strip of circuitry within. The doors open and Turlough quickly hides it in a towel he then uses to dry himself as the Doctor enters, eyes locked on the handheld tracker which is beeping loudly.

TURLOUGH
Doctor...

DOCTOR
The point of emission moved!

The Doctor crosses to Turlough, surprised. The beeping is louder.

DOCTOR
You're soaking wet!

He moves to switch off the tracker when he realizes how loud it is. Frowning, he moves it to the towelled bundle. The beeping get louder and shriller. The Doctor switches it off. Pale, Turlough hands it over. The Doctor opens the bundle and finds the circuits. He looks at Turlough suspiciously.

DOCTOR
A data core... Where did you find this?

TURLOUGH
On the shore.

DOCTOR
A data core for a beacon. Sent across space like a shipwrecked sailor's bottle... With a message in it. Who from, I wonder? And where?

TURLOUGH
It's ancient. Probably just reactivated when the divers disturbed it.

DOCTOR
Perhaps. Still, it must be the source of the signal, and with a bit of help from the TARDIS computer, we can find out exactly why Kamelion set the coordinates for here.

The Doctor drops the towel and cylinder on the console and takes the core to the other side of the console.

TURLOUGH
Doctor, Kamelion's had another fit, you better go and see him.

The Doctor looks up sharply.

DOCTOR
Was he connected to the computer?

TURLOUGH
Not when I found him.

DOCTOR
Pity. That means it must be an internal malfunction.

The Doctor starts to head for the door, pauses, snatches up the data core and then leaves. Turlough watches him go, then scowls and brings his fist down on the console.

Peri starts to dream...

INT. TARDIS - TEGAN'S ROOM (DAY)

Peri is mumbling to herself in her sleep.

INT. TARDIS - KAMELION'S ROOM (DAY)

Kamelion is dumped like a heap of scrap in the corner. It twitches slightly.

MONTAGE

A small girl heads up a stair case.

PERI
Please, Howard...

Kamelion twitches again. Its eyes roll randomly in its head. Peri shifts under the covers.

GIRL
Please...

A dark room. The small girl stands looking at the bright doorway. A silhouette appears.

GIRL
Don't put out the light!

Peri is tossing and turning. The small girl is weeping. Kamelion is starting to sparkle.

PERI
Please, Howard!

GIRL
Please!

PERI
Please!

KAMELION
Please...

Kamelion is glowing brightly. The silhouette fills the doorway, marking everything dark.

GIRL
Please, Howard, don't put out the light!

KAMELION
Don't put out the light!

Darkness. The small girl is screaming. Peri is almost awake. Kamelion is transforming. Their voices merge and overlap, echoing as he assumes a new form.

VOICES
Please, Howard, please, Howard, light, don't, Howard, please, Howard, Howard, Howard....

Peri sits bolt upright in bed, wide awake. Kamelion is transforming into Howard. Peri looks around in shock. Kamelion-Howard now sits up, smiling to himself as he spots the open roundel. He rises and crosses to it as Peri picks up the plastic bag containing her clothes and examines it.

INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (DAY)

The Doctor is wiring the core to the console, as well as repairing the damage Turlough did earlier.

TURLOUGH
So, Kamelion's broken down?

DOCTOR
I might be able to revive him later. After the tampering by the Daleks, his whole psycho-neural network is almost on the point of collapse.

TURLOUGH
So what are you going to do about it?

DOCTOR
I'll think of something. I'm not losing anyone else. Now, let's see what the computer makes of this...

TURLOUGH
Doctor.

DOCTOR
What?

TURLOUGH
There's something I have to tell you.

The Doctor puts down the core, worried.

DOCTOR
What is it?

INT. TARDIS - KAMELION'S ROOM (DAY)

Kamelion-Howard crosses to the open roundel and reconnects his cable to himself and the conduit. He closes his eyes, concentrating. Lights flash inside the roundel.

INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (DAY)

The core sparks and shorts out. The Doctor snatches it up and examines it.

DOCTOR
Oh, no!

TURLOUGH
What happened? Some kind of power surge?

DOCTOR
Yes, it's fried the data core - now we'll never know where the beacon came from! What was it you wanted to tell me, by the way?

TURLOUGH
Doesn't matter.

INT. TARDIS - KAMELION'S ROOM (DAY)

Kamelion-Howard continues to concentrate. More lights flash.

INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (DAY)

The Doctor steps closer to Turlough, frowning.

DOCTOR
You've been worrying about something all day. Anything wrong, Turlough?

Before Turlough can reply, the doors swing shut.

DOCTOR
Did you do that?

TURLOUGH
Of course not!

The time rotor begins to rise and fall. The Doctor checks the controls.

DOCTOR
The TARDIS has dematerialized!

TURLOUGH
It's Kamelion, it's got to be!

DOCTOR
Impossible! He's out for the count....

KAMELION-HOWARD (VO)
So, Doctor.

Turlough and the Doctor turn to see Kamelion-Howard leaning in the doorway.

KAMELION-HOWARD
We meet again.

"Howard" then enters the console room, claiming to have seen Turlough rescue Peri -- and the confused Peri also arrives. The Doctor apologises and promises to return them to Earth as soon as possible, and as Peri tries to figure out what's going on, the TARDIS materializes on Sarn.

INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (DAY)

Kamelion-Howard is calmly answering Peri's increasingly hysterical questions. Turlough is hissing an explanation at the Doctor, exasperated. The Doctor is checking the console as the time rotor rises and falls.

TURLOUGH
She was drowning. No one else could have saved her.

The Doctor stares blankly at him.

DOCTOR
So you just brought her inside the TARDIS?

TURLOUGH
She might have needed medical attention.

DOCTOR
Yes. No doubt. Is that what you were so worried about?

Turlough frowns, baffled.

TURLOUGH
What?

DOCTOR
Bringing home a very pretty girl without permission? A girl no doubt incredibly and embrassingly grateful for you saving her from downing?

The Doctor's joking slightly, but Turlough thinks for a moment. It's as good an excuse for his behavior as any.

TURLOUGH
More or less.

DOCTOR
Well, as much as I sympathize, we're still left with two unwilling passengers.

The Doctor glances significantly at the duo nearby.

PERI
I don't get it... You dumped me on that boat!

KAMELION-HOWARD
I was coming back for you.

PERI
So why did you let me think it was a trick?!

KAMELION-HOWARD
If I stopped to explain it to you, it would have taken even more time and you would definitely have missed your flight. But you had to be so damned impulsive and swim to shore. You know you're not as good as you pretend - it's one thing doing an extra lap to impress the boys. It was pure luck Turlough was able to save you - I sure as hell couldn't have got there in time. You nearly DROWNED, Peri.

PERI
Yeah. Well. Like mom always says. You gotta take the opportunities you get.

KAMELION-HOWARD
Well, we've certainly got an opportunity here. Time travel.

PERI
You don't believe that Doctor guy do you?

KAMELION-HOWARD
Why? Don't you?

PERI
It's not that, but, come on! Time machines? No one travels in time!

KAMELION-HOWARD
I saw the outside, Peri. What they say makes sense.

PERI
They're lunatics! Why are you being so calm?!

KAMELION-HOWARD
It's called being mature, Peri. You'll learn about it when you grow up.

Peri fumes. She whispers spitefully.

PERI
Mature isn't falling hook line and sinker for some science fiction story told by two English guys you haven't met before!

KAMELION-HOWARD
Like the two English guys you never met before you were going to Morocco with?

PERI
Look, I feel sick. I wanna go back to the hotel.

KAMELION-HOWARD
Well, we'll have to ask the Doctor.

PERI
"Doctor"? He needs some urgent medical treatment himself if he believes what he's telling us...

Kamelion-Howard folds his arms amused.

KAMELION-HOWARD
You think he's cute, don't you?

PERI
I do not!

Back at the console, the Doctor disconnects the data core and pockets it. Turlough shakes head.

TURLOUGH
I still don't understand. How did the Professor get inside? I closed the doors.

DOCTOR
You were probably just distracted. Too busy putting that girl in Tegan's bed.

Turlough bristles at the Doctor's annoyed tone.

TURLOUGH
It was the nearest!

The Doctor ignores him. The time rotor stops moving with a chime.

DOCTOR
Ah! We've materialized!

PERI
We've what?

TURLOUGH
Where are we?

DOCTOR
Instruments are still reorientating, but we seem to be around fifteen years in the future...

PERI
Future?!?

DOCTOR
Fifteen, sixteen, about that. But we're on the other side of the galaxy to Earth.

Peri turns to Kamelion-Howard.

PERI
And you believe him, I suppose?!

KAMELION-HOWARD
Yes.

Peri deflates.

PERI
Oh. OK. Fine. Time machine. Whatever.

The Sarns have gathered in a communal meeting hall, where Timanov and Malkon urge them to prove their faith by remaining in the settlement during the Time of Fire. But the Unbelievers wish to evacuate -- and then Amyand and Roskal arrive, claiming to have trespassed on the sacred mountain and seen nothing. As Timanov's standing begins to wane he prays for a sign -- and in an unfortunate coincidence of timing, a fresh quake rocks the settlement and the sacrificial chamber bursts into flame. Malkon is now faced with the unpleasant duty of ordering the burning of the Unbelievers... but before he can do so, a lookout who saw the TARDIS' materialization arrives to announce that the Outsider has come!

EXT. TEMPLE RUINS (DAY)

The Doctor emerges from the TARDIS. Turlough follows.

TURLOUGH
Desolate... isn't it?

DOCTOR
Unsurprising. This is a world in its final stages of its existence.

TURLOUGH
How long has it got?

DOCTOR
Hard to say. But we're safe for the moment.

The Doctor crosses to look at the vista beyond the rubble and pillars.

DOCTOR
A desert of ash and solidified lava. Sterile black tufa as far as the eye can see. Reminds me of Pompei.

A distant volcanic rumble. Turlough grimaces.

TURLOUGH
Pompei was utterly destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius. That thing could erupt at any moment!

DOCTOR
Not according to the seismic scan in the TARDIS.

The Doctor fans himself with his hat and moves through the temple.

TURLOUGH
I used to have nightmares of this landscape every night.

DOCTOR
This landscape specifically?

TURLOUGH
Something like it.

DOCTOR
Have you been here before?

TURLOUGH
No. I was trying to imagine what it would be like.

The Doctor frowns, baffled.

DOCTOR
Why?

TURLOUGH
Er, we were reading Dante with Mr Sellick. "Abandon hope all ye that enter here." I was just thinking... he might have been describing this place.

Turlough glances suspiciously back at the TARDIS behind them.

TURLOUGH
We shouldn't have left Kamelion.

DOCTOR
Poor old Kamelion's virtually lobotomized. It'll take months to repair him - if he can be repaired.

The Doctor crouches down to examine some overturned pillars. Turlough mutters under his breath.

TURLOUGH
Good.

INT. TARDIS CONTROL ROOM (DAY)

The scanner shows Turlough and the Doctor moving out of sight. Peri and her fake stepfather watch on.

PERI
Do you think we've really left Earth?

Kamelion-Howard smugly turns away from the scanner.

KAMELION-HOWARD
And now, the TARDIS is mine.

PERI
Pardon?

Kamelion-Howard closes the doors, grinning.

KAMELION-HOWARD
The TARDIS is mine.

Kamelion-Howard begins to reset controls.

PERI
Howard, what are you doing?

KAMELION-HOWARD
Paralleling the navigation unit to another TARDIS.

PERI
What?! You can't even use a can opener! Leave this stuff alone!

KAMELION-HOWARD
I enjoyed this form. Such order. Logic. And a vein of pure ruthlessnes. Still, one would expect that from a survivor of so many faculty purges. Professor Foster suited my purposes admirably... which is why I extracted his persona from your aura. Now the nature of the emergency is understood.

He laughs and presses a control. Lights on the console flash.

PERI
Don't touch that!

Kamelion-Howard is laughing, starting to sparkle and transform.

KAMELION-HOWARD
I have succeeded!

The android's true form rises to the surface as Howard fades away.

KAMELION
CONTACT HAS BEEN MADE!

The sparkles thicken further and, off screen, fade out. Peri gapes at Kamelion's new form.

PERI
W-who are you?!

We see the smiling dark-suited man with the beard that has replaced Kamelion.

KAMELION-MASTER
I am the Master - and you will obey me.

Wow. Even mentioning the very idea of re-writing Androzani, even indavertently, surely has to be proof that you have balls of iron. Or are insane. Or an idiot.
Or all of the above.

I say it's good stuff, even though it doesn't change much in the story... but then I guess that's the whole point. Planet of Fire is actually one of my all-time faves. It's wonderfully tense and atmospheric, and probably the Master's best story. (He's great in Survival, sure, but the story is a bit too silly in that one...)

Was it a deliberate move to make Turlough's torturing of Kamelion look more justified and reasonable? Given that in the ep he just seems to be a complete prick.

No, that's Miles.

"Or are insane."
Yeah, that sounds like me.

"Or an idiot."
Yep, me.

"Or all of the above."
Could be me, could be you.

Definitely. Eps 2 - 4 of Planet of Fire are near freaking perfect in my opinion.

"Planet of Fire is actually one of my all-time faves. It's wonderfully tense and atmospheric, and probably the Master's best story." Ironic, considering he only really appears in one episode and the rest of the time it's actually Kamelion...

"(He's great in Survival, sure, but the story is a bit too silly in that one...)"
I found it worryingly RTD-esque. There's even a cameo by Jackie Tyler in the last ep...

"Was it a deliberate move to make Turlough's torturing of Kamelion look more justified and reasonable? Given that in the ep he just seems to be a complete prick."
Well, yeah.

A) it was to synch up properly with Warhead
B) AFAIUI, the Kamelion scenes were understandably curtailed because the fucking prop was broken and cursed. So when Turlough tortured Kamelion it was both unclear what the hell he was doing and WHY he was doing it.

Which is why I fixed it.

There's only two other bits in POF I would alter - one, the bit where Turlough's racism shocks the Doctor and two, the bit where Amyand tries to kill the mini-Master. With the Doctor's permission.
