The End of the Road VIII

43. INT. CHAPEL (DAY)

This is shown on the scanner.

GREAT HEALER
Events have come to a head.

Tasembaker looks up at the catacomb entrance as something enters. Light bounces off its metal white surfaces.

TASAMBEKER
W-what is that?!

GREAT HEALER
Do not fear it, Tasambeker.

TASAMBEKER
It... it looks like...

GREAT HEALER
The design is a practical one which I have adapted. But they are not the monsters of legend. They merely share the appearance. This is one of my personal guard.

A shadow is now over Tasembaker. She is illuminated briefly as light pulse with the metallic voice.

DRONE VOICE
I OBEY THE GREAT HEALER.

GREAT HEALER
These are battle drones. They are virtually indestructible and they have limitless strength. Their power source is a core of pure plasma energy. And a neutron blaster capable of punching through durialinium-bonded alloy!

A close-up of a familiar-looking weapon.

GREAT HEALER
I have an army of them constructed with the sole purpose of protecting the Pherran system and its people.

TASAMBEKER
From what?

GREAT HEALER
From the cause of the plagues and diseases that have been released onto this galaxy. Humanity and its allies are being attacked by a third force. And my army is the one thing that will stop them.

The screen changes to show the reception hall. Tasambeker looks up at it.

GREAT HEALER
Open broadcasting frequencies. Attention, Tranquil Repose.

44. MONTAGE

We see the exterior of the complex; two corridors where attendants stand, listening; the catacombs; another corridor; the DJ’s suite; the Garden of Fond Memories.

GREAT HEALER
Attention, Tranquil Repose. Attention. This is the Great Healer. Galactic President Vargos shall be arriving in the next few minutes. With the violent intrusion of body-snatchers, I have decided that Tranquil Repose security has been unacceptably compromised.

45. INT. RECEPTION AREA (DAY)

Everyone looks at the ceiling. The siege is forgotten.

GREAT HEALER
It is time for a more enlightened, efficient and dedicated force to take over the welfare of this establishment. Mr. Takis is now relieved from his position as Security Commander.

Takis has a look of fury on his face.

TAKIS
You treacherous little mutant...

GREAT HEALER
Experience has shown me that humanoid life forms are not reliable, susceptible to bribery, blackmail, fear and lust. This facility shall now be protected by those INCAPABLE of corruption.

PERI
What does he mean?

GREAT HEALER
I have already dispatched squads of my bodyguards to the reception area and other key locations in the complex. Obey their instructions and you will all be protected and secure during the presidential visit.

46. INT. CHAPEL (DAY)

As before.

GREAT HEALER
Any obstruction or hesitation to obey an order will be interpreted as an act of direct mutiny – and punished accordingly.

47. INT. RECEPTION AREA (DAY)

As before.

GREAT HEALER
This is the Great Healer, wishing you a happy and productive day.

Takis looks in shock.

TAKIS
Why is this happening?

48. INT. CHAPEL (DAY)

As before.

GREAT HEALER
Divert power to the tombs. Begin the revivification program, maximum power.

TASAMBEKER
Yes, Great Healer.

Tasambeker nervously approaches a small hatch on the console, opens it and presses the control within. The metallic heartbeat begins to speed up.

GREAT HEALER
It is time for my army to awake.

49. INT. CATACOMBS (DAY)

Bright light builds up behind the glass hatches. The heartbeat is more like a drum roll, getting louder and louder. The catacombs themselves begin to tremble.

50. INT. RECEPTION AREA (DAY)

As before. The Doctor strokes his chin in thought.

DOCTOR
You know, that voice sounded very familiar.

PERI
So he IS a friend of yours?

DOCTOR
I wouldn’t want to commit myself, but we have met. If only I could remember where...

There is a faint shudder. The feathers in the displays sway.

GRIGORY
What was that?

JOBEL
Must be the snow storm. Part of the Long Cold.

DOCTOR
I’m not so sure. I think that...

There is another, stronger shudder. Several attendants struggle to keep their feet.

PERI
It’s an earthquake!

JOBEL
Nonsense, pretty one. Nekros has never had any seismic tremors and never will.

Another violent shudder. Jobel falls over, his toupee askew. As he struggles to steady it, the vibration continues. Only the Doctor keeps his footing. Several displays topple over, and the death mask is shaken from the sarcophagus and shatters against the floor.

LILT
What’s happening?

DOCTOR
Something underground...

The Doctor loses his footing.

DOCTOR
It’s waking up!

51. MODEL SHOT

The whole of Tranquil Repose is shuddering.

52. INT. DJ’S RECORDING SUITE (DAY)

The DJ grips the sides of his chair as the room shakes. LPs skid across the floor.

DJ
Just try and sleep through it, guys – normal service will be resumed A.S.A.P!

53. INT. CATACOMBS (DAY)

The whole foundations are trembling. Finally, the hatches unseal with loud hisses and with one massive lurch, the vibration ends.

54. INT. CHAPEL (DAY)

Tasambeker clings to console in fright. A guard hugs a statue. They look around, realizing the shaking has ended.

55. INT. TR CORRIDOR (DAY)

An attendant lies sprawled on the floor, shocked.

56. INT. DJ’S RECORDING STUDIO (DAY)

The DJ slumps in relief as the room steadies.

57. INT. RECEPTION AREA (DAY)

The Doctor gets to his feet. Most of the attendants (and Grigory) stay where they are, too afraid to move.

PERI
Thank God that’s all over.

DOCTOR
I doubt it that it is all over, Peri. I think it could very well just be starting.

40. INT. CATACOMBS (DAY)

Suddenly the hatches in the catacombs slam back, one after another. A shape emerges through the smoke from the nearest catacomb. It may be called a Drone but it's something else entirely...

It is a DALEK – but not a type we have seen before. It is cream white in colour, with golden sensor domes on its skirt, golden appendages, shoulder slats, grill section and eye stalk. Its sucker-arm is a specially-modified shape, as if to plug into things. A hexagon shape is marked between its sucker arm and gun. Its head-lamps are flat golden discs and the edges flash white.

The Dalek turns and heads down the corridor towards the entrance to the catacombs. Another Dalek follows it, and another and another. More Daleks are gliding from the empty tombs while more hatches continue to slam open, allowing more Daleks to emerge.

58. INT. TR CORRIDOR (DAY)

The attendant lying on the floor is just about to rise when the double doors slide back and a Dalek emerges out of the gloom and glides inside. The attendant tries to scramble out of the way as the Dalek bears down on them, followed by more.

59. INT. CATACOMBS (DAY)

There is now a long queue of Daleks gliding silently down the tunnel, up the ramp and into the complex. More hatches slam open and Daleks emerge, joining the queue right away.

60. INT. CHAPEL (DAY)

Tasembaker is not quite hiding her fear as two Daleks enter the chapel, joining the one already present and take position on either side of her. The guard is only slightly more composed.

GREAT HEALER
The catacombs are giving up their secrets at long last. The Daleks have returned!

Tasambeker stares in horror at the Dalek in front of her. It stares back.

61. INT. CATACOMBS (DAY)

Daleks glide down the tunnels.

62. INT. TR CORRIDOR (DAY)

Attendants scatter as Daleks motor down the corridor towards them.

63. INT. CATACOMBS (DAY)

More hatches slide back and Daleks emerge out into the tunnels.

64. INT. TR CORRIDOR (DAY)

Dalek after Dalek sweeps out of the corridor.

65. INT. CATACOMBS (DAY)

An endless string of Daleks. More hatches retreat to reveal Daleks who join the queue.

66. INT. DJ’S RECORDING STUDIO (DAY)

An image fills the screen. Another TR corridor, with Daleks gliding straight towards camera. The DJ’s jaw drops in horror. He shrinks the image, and we see all six of the nine images that show the inside of TR feature Daleks. Each one of those images takes its turn to fill the screen, then reduce back to make way for its successor.

67. INT. RECEPTION AREA (DAY)

The internal doors burst open and two Daleks glide into the room. There is a panic. Attendants run screaming. The Doctor stands where he is, stunned.

DOCTOR
Daleks...

DALEK 1
REMAIN STILL. REMAIN SILENT. WE OBEY THE GREAT HEALER.

TAKIS
YOU’RE his new security forces? His body guards?!

DALEK 2
SILENCE. ANY AND ALL RESISTANCE WILL BE PUNISHED.

Lilt looks at them, unsure how they could ever threaten him.

LILT
How?

DOCTOR
I have the nasty feeling the word ‘exterminate’ may about to be used.

DALEK 1
EXTERMINATION IS UNNECESSARY. THE GREAT HEALER DOES NOT KILL.

JOBEL
I am Chief Embalmer! This place would fall apart without me! I RULE HERE!

DALEK 2
YOU RULE NO LONGER.

DALEK 1
YOUR AUTHORITY IS BYPASSED BY ORDER OF THE GREAT HEALER. YOU WILL OBEY US.

Jobel smiles reasonably.

JOBEL
In that case...

Jobel runs up the steps to the sarcophagus, but two Daleks glide into view, one on either side of the plinth.

DALEK 3
DO NOT MOVE!

DALEK 4
DO NOT MOVE!

Jobel stops and turns to face the others. The Dalek Leader’s eye stick trains itself on the Doctor’s horrified face.

DALEK 1
RESISTANCE IS USELESS. THIS FACILITY IS NOW UNDER DALEK COMMAND.

PERI
With only four of you? Good luck...

DOCTOR
I dare say there are plenty just outside. Four is all that’s needed in this room. Now, when I say ‘run’, run...

DALEK 2
SILENCE.

68. INT. DJ’S RECORDING SUITE (DAY)

The DJ raises his eyebrows in surprise.

DJ
Well, guys, I didn’t see that one coming. Though you might have. Looks like the Planet of the Deceased is going to be renamed the Planet of Extermination. My mother always said there’d be days where ancient extra-terrestrial xenophobic killers will invade your workplace at the behest of your unknown employers. But she said that a lot until we changed her medication. Well, you lot, why don’t we have a phone in about this latest development and until our first caller rings in, you know where to find me.

Gerry Rafferty’s Baker Street begins to play. The DJ mimes playing the sax solo.

69. INT. RECEPTION AREA (DAY)

The Dalek approaches the Doctor.

DALEK 1
YOU WILL COME WITH US.

DOCTOR
Will I?

DALEK 1
YOU ARE OUR PRISONER. YOU WILL BE TAKEN TO THE GREAT HEALER.

The Doctor shrugs, beaten.

DOCTOR
Well, if you put it like that...

He pulls out a gun and aims it at the Dalek’s eyestalk.

DOCTOR
TAKE THAT, YOU TIN-PLATED TERROR!

He fires the gun. We see a rubber-tipped sucker-dart cover the eyepiece.

DALEK 1
ALERT!

DOCTOR
Down!

DALEK 1
MY VISION IS IMPAIRED – I CANNOT SEE...

Everyone ducks as the nearest Dalek fires at him. He shoots it in the eye-stalk, then spins on the spot and blinds one of the Daleks beside the sarcophagus. The remaining one fires at the Doctor. He dives out of the way, but the beam seems to impact.

PERI
Doctor!

The Doctor looks at the gun in his hand. Everything past the trigger has melted away.

DOCTOR
RUN!

NATASHA
C’mon Grigory...

The Doctor, Peri and the bodysnatchers flee to the exit. The lead Dalek turns to face them, firing its blaster in their direction. Another set of doors bursts open and another four Daleks glide in as the group dive through the doorway.

DOCTOR
I told you there was more, didn’t I?

70. INT. OUTSIDE RECEPTION AREA (DAY)

Natasha and the Doctor slam the doors shut. Grigory punches a code on the door lock.

71. INT. RECEPTION AREA (DAY)

The other TR workers are hiding. The lead Dalek aims its sucker arm up towards its eye. Suddenly the dart is ripped from the eye stalk into the cup.

DALEK 1
VISION RESTORED!

The Daleks close in on the closed doorway.

72. INT. OUTSIDE RECEPTION AREA (DAY)

As before.

GRIGORY
That won’t hold them for long.

DOCTOR
It doesn’t have to. We head outside and get back to the TARDIS.

PERI
Right in front of you.

Peri heads off. Natasha grabs the Doctor’s arm.

NATASHA
The Long Cold’s due to start any hour, we need transport.

DOCTOR
We have legs, let us use them while we can.

Grigory nods and leaves.

GRIGORY
Frozen stiff once today... twice can’t hurt...

The Doctor runs off, dragging Natasha along as she still clings to his arm. A moment later the doors swing open to reveal a Dalek.

DALEK 1
FUGITIVES HEADING FOR THE GARDEN OF FOND MEMORIES.

73. INT. CHAPEL (DAY)

This is shown on the scanner.

GREAT HEALER
Perfect. Now, Tasambeker, you shall see the most fitting, ironic and above all humiliating fate to befall a Lord of Time.

74. EXT. THE GARDEN OF FOND MEMORIES (DAY)

It is snowing lightly now. The quartet run up the ramp.

DOCTOR
We’re in luck, it’s only a passing breeze.

NATASHA
It’s freezing!

DOCTOR
Oh, we’ll reach the TARDIS long before that, come on!

75. INT. OUTSIDE RECEPTION AREA (DAY)

Daleks glide through the doors, one after the other.

76. EXT. THE GARDEN OF FOND MEMORIES (DAY)

The group are hurrying between the statues. The first Dalek appears at the bottom of the ramp and begins to ascend it, while more Daleks arrive behind it. The group run along the pond, the Doctor ending up at the rear. He follows them, but pauses as he registers he is standing beneath his monument. He looks up at it apprehensively, then, gritting his teeth, he turns to follow the others.

77. INT. CHAPEL (DAY)

As before. Tasembaker stands by the console, hand on a control.

GREAT HEALER
Now.

Tasembaker presses the control. The Great Healer chuckles.

78. EXT. THE GARDEN OF FOND MEMORIES (DAY)

The statue sways forward then backwards, making an ominous creaking noise. The Doctor and the others turn around as the whole thing tips over – fitted together in horizontal sections, it is collapsing like a house of cards.

PERI
DOCTOR! WATCH OUT!

The Doctor turns to face the others, about to sprint out of danger. For a moment, his eyes connect with Peri. Then, the pieces of the statue crash down on him. In a moment, he is buried, the rubble bouncing and shifting. The shockingly loud crash is followed by silence – only the sounds of the snowstorm.

79. INT. CHAPEL (DAY)

On the screen, the heap of rubble falls still. The Great Healer’s chuckles are louder.

80. EXT. THE GARDEN OF FOND MEMORIES (DAY)

Peri stands in shock, staring at the pile of rubble. There is a corner of the Doctor’s coat still visible. Grigory grabs her arm.

GRIGORY
We have got to move!

She pays him no heed, eyes fixed on the rubble. The Daleks advance.

DALEK 1
YOU MUST SURRENDER.

DALEK 2
YOU ARE OUR PRISONER.

Another Dalek appears behind them, closing in.

DALEK 3
YOU WILL NOT RESIST.

With looks of sick terror on their faces, the body snatchers grimly raise their hands. Peri continues to stare at the rubble. Red blood is trickling through a crack in the pieces of stone, pooling on the cold ground.

81. INT. CHAPEL (DAY)

We see the spreading bloodstain on the scanner. The Great Healer’s chuckles are now, huge, screaming, almost pained laughs. Tasambeker stares ahead, face totally devoid of expression, but there is fear in her eyes. Then she smiles. And giggles. And laughs. She’s laughing as much as the Great Healer now, almost uncontrollably. Insanely.

We pan beside her to finally see the console in the middle of the chamber clearly for the first time. At the heart of the console is a glass cylinder stretching up to the ceiling, its upper half containing lots of coiling wires and cables around a light fitting that flashes in time with the Great Healer’s voice. The bottom half contains a severed head connected to the base of the tube, along with more wires.

The Head is that of Davros, and as he continues to laugh, his voice becomes more and more modulated, until he sounds like the screaming being Takis found ten years ago.
